Students take lessons in scorching heat, while authorities want a facelift of govt schools

What is more important — Vitrified tiles, costly art paintings or basic shelter to protect schoolchildren from scorching heat and rain? The Chandigarh administration needs to think a little before deciding on the priorities of schoolchildren. For, the education department has recently sent a circular to all government schools asking them to fix Johnson-make “A” grade vitrified tiles on floor, paintings and mural work on walls.

A large number of patients visiting the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, one of the three premier government hospitals here, for thyroid tests have been returning home disappointed as the requisite kit for the test has been out of stock for the past four weeks.

In a big jolt to commissioner and tourism secretary Keshni Anand Arora’s move to allow the use of Pinjore Garden for marriage functions, Haryana tourism and environment minister Kiran Chaudhary has made it clear that it would prove detrimental to the heritage monument. The minister said this while talking to media persons here today.

Caught in red tapism, hundreds of thousands of soldiers and their families are being denied the right to vote at their place of posting. In spite of repeated representations, the government has failed to issue a notification, granting this basic right to the soldiers.

Sec-18 shopkeeper held, 2 booked
Chandigarh, April 30
The police today arrested one person and booked two others, all shopkeepers from Sector 18, on charges of manhandling, causing injuries and criminal intimidation. The accused have been identified as Rajeev, Kamal and Navjeevan.

Bus routes shift to Sec-43 today
Chandigarh, April 30
From tomorrow morning, all buses to Punjab and Himachal Pradesh will be plying from the Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT), Sector 43, instead of ISBT, Sector 17. The buses to Paonta Sahib and Dehradun via Nahan will also ply from the new bus stand. With this, the Sector 43 bus stand will cater to around 1,400 inter-state buses besides all local public transport vehicles.

25-year-old Vikram Heart patient needs help
Chandigarh, April 30
Vikram, a 25-year-old resident of Togan village, Mohali, is suffering from rheumatic heart disease that has affected his heart valves. Due to the illness, he is unable to carry on with any physical work and requires an urgent double valve replacement to correct the defect.

AXIS Bank client duped of Rs 40,000
Panchkula, April 30
Disclosure of password in response to a mail from a hacker cost dear to a net banking user. The hacker from New Delhi lost no time in withdrawing Rs 40,000 from the AXIS Bank account of Alok Kumar Aggarwal, an official of VMT Spinning Company Limited, Baddi.

Eight booked for torching priest
Chandigarh, April 30
The police today booked eight persons allegedly involved in torching the priest of a temple in Kajheri village yesterday. In his statement, the priest alleged that Tarshem Chand alias Pinki along with other members of the village forcibly torched him. He was rushed to the hospital, where he is still said to be in a critical condition.

The Studio Challenge theatre group presented a Hindi play ‘Vyaktigat’ (individualism) at the Randhawa Auditorium here today. The play, written by Dr Laxmi Narain Lal, portrayed the modern woman nursing all her desires but suppressed by a demanding husband for his personal gains and happiness.
