extinguished the Olympic torch today on the Paris leg of its
journey, disrupted by protesters against China's crackdown on
Tibet.

rules out bonus on wheat Chandigarh, April

Union agriculture
minister Sharad Pawar here today virtually ruled out the
possibility of bonus on wheat. Though Punjab Chief Minister
Parkash Singh Badal and his counterpart from Haryana Bhupinder
Singh Hooda pressed Pawar hard for announcing bonus for wheat,
he refused to yield.

Sikhs may not be a
minority in Punjab, as recently ruled by the Supreme Court,
but they now enjoy minority status in some other states of
India. In a significant development, state governments of
Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have notified Sikhs as minority
communities.

Sotheby’s today announced that an armour plate, which is
claimed to be of 10th Sikh Guru Gobind Singh, had been
withdrawn from the sale scheduled for April 9.

blames paparazzi, driver for Diana’s death London,
April 7
Britain’s Princess
Diana and her boyfriend Dodi Fayed were unlawfully killed in
a 1997 car crash due to “grossly negligent” driving of
their chauffeur and the paparazzi trailing their car, the
jury in her inquest said today, setting at rest conspiracy
theories about her death. Princess Diana, who was killed in a car crash in 1997.
Sensex
up 414 Mumbai, April 7
The markets surged today
with the Sensex gaining 2.7 per cent or 414 points to close at
15, 757 levels on the back of positive showing globally. In the
broader markets, Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also shot
up by 114.20 points or 2.46 per cent to close at 4,761.20 from
its last close of 4,647.

Calling Rahul Gandhi’s
pro-Dalit politics a sham, Chief Minister Mayawati today charged
Rahul Gandhi of having a bath with a special soap and undergoing
“shudhikaran” (ritual cleansing) every time he stayed or ate
at a Dalit’s house.
Sikhs
want Advani’s apology New Delhi, April 7
Former Deputy Prime Minister Lal
Krishna Advani’s book “My country, my life” has run into yet
another controversy. This time the Sikh community here has taken umbrage
at the reference to the events in the days preceding Operation Bluestar
in June 1984. Reacting to reference on page 430 of the book, the Delhi
Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee has sought an apology from Advani and
the BJP for its alleged “role of an instigator” in the days
preceding the Operation.
