Jalandhar, March 20
Jagjobanjit Kaur is oblivious of the popping flashbulbs as her maternal grandparents narrate the misfortune that has befallen their daughter being held in captivity in the Philippines.

The year-old girl, dressed in a fetching white frock, smiles and makes little gestures at the people around her and even tries to grab a newspersons’ camera, at a press conference as her maternal grandmother Mohinder Kaur sobs softly in the background.

This is the moving story of Ramneek Kaur, who got married to Ranjit Singh of Moga, to give wings to the couple’s dollar dreams after they got married in Philippines in June, 2006. The couple has a daughter, Jagjobanjit, also lovingly called Jasmine.

Ramneek’s father Harchand Singh said things went fine till Jasmine was born following which Ranjit Singh showed his true colours and started harassing their daughter for money. “We would receive calls at odd hours and could hear our daughter being hit and wailing loudly in the background.”

Ranjit would then threaten them that if they did not send more money, he would get their daughter eliminated, he alleged.

He revealed that the match had been settled through Moga travel agent Amandeep Kaur, alias Deepa Boss, who too would say that fixing Ramneek was not her job.

“Out of love for our daughter, we sent money through people they directed on many occasions and till date Rs 18 lakh has been paid by me to Ranjit,” he revealed.

But this time when I expressed my inability to do anything more, he came to India on March 9 with Jasmine, leaving Ramneek behind in the Philippines. Ranjit said he would leave their daughter and marry another girl unless he was paid Rs 2 lakh, Harchand added.

Unable to withstand further mental torture, we reported the matter to Lok Bhalai Party chief B.S. Ramoowalia, who got in touch with the immigration authorities and did not allow Ranjit to board a flight to the Philippines. “Ranjit had got wind that we were trying to initiate legal proceedings against him. We reported the matter to the Moga police and Ranjit was detained at Badhani police station. To our utter shock, he was treated as the complainant and we were made out to be the accused. Senior cops detained us till 2 am at the police station and let Ranjit go today without charging him,” Harchand alleged.

They did not pay heed to our pleas that he should be interrogated to know the whereabouts of Ramneek, who had not called us after Ranjit was detained on March 16. She had been pleading with us that she was being held in captivity somewhere by Amandeep and was being tortured, he said.

Harchand said he was making a living by plying three trucks, two of which had been sold to meet the demands of Ranjit. “My family is a mental and financial wreck and we appeal to the Prime Minister to get our daughter back home safely,” he appealed.

Avtar Singh Mullanpuri and R.S. Bharowal, senior vice-president and general secretary of the LBP, respectively, said Ramoowalia was in touch with the Indian ambassador in Manila and efforts were afoot to trace Ramneek.

“In case nothing was done we would hand over the child to the Lok Sabha Speaker and urge him to get the needful done,” they added.

Women officers should come forward, says MP Avinash Rai

Hoshiarpur, March 20
Women officers, including those in the IAS, IPS, IRS, judiciary and other allied services should come forward and become role models to stop the menace of female foeticide.

This was revealed by Hoshiarpur MP Avinash Rai Khanna, while talking to The Tribune.

Khanna said the declining number of females was quite alarming and would create serious problems if the imbalance was not taken seriously. “This is why I honoured women police employees of my constituency in different functions on March 15,” said Avinash. He said his aim was to make people realise the importance of females who were earning livelihood and supporting their families.

The MP said a special seminar on “Girls have also the right to live” is going to be held on March 23 at Ropar and all women IAS, IPS and judicial officers of Punjab had been invited for the event.

The seminar would be presided over by Parkash Singh Badal's wife Surinder Kaur, while Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Vijendra Jain would be the chief guest.

He said the union health ministry had provided a special grant of Rs 5 lakh to him for carrying out the campaign against female foeticide.

Avinash said he would organise a “chetna yatra” from Hoshiarpur to Anandpur Sahib in the last week of March to create awareness on the PNDT Act.

“Prior to the state assembly elections in 2007, Parkash Singh Badal had approached me for political support and both of us had agreed on a common minimum programme,” Shiv Sena (Hindustan) president Pawan Gupta said at a press meet here on Thursday.

He said he had been touring Punjab to appoint office-bearers of the different units of the state. He criticised the BJP-SAD government led by Badal and said his party had provided all kinds of support to the combine, but after the installation of the government the SAD and the BJP had failed to adhere to the promises made before the elections.

He also criticised Bal Thackeray for his alleged statements and action against the unity and integrity of the country.
