Jalandhar, March 17
If all goes well, some vacant posts in the armed forces would be filled by Punjabi rural youth in the coming months after the completion of a pilot project being run by the district administration.

The administration, in cooperation with the District Sainik Welfare Board, has taken upon itself to coach deserving youngsters to qualify for admission to the National Defence Academy (NDA). Presently, 18,000 posts of officers are lying vacant in the forces.

Deputy commissioner Ajit Singh Pannu said they were pained to know that a large number of seats in defence academies in the country were vacant for want of suitable candidates. “It is a matter of shame for us that Punjabis, who have always been proud of their martial traditions, are now shy of donning the uniform,” he pointed out.

The matter was discussed with the board and the education department in the last session and it was decided that five government schools in Nakodar, Wadala, Alawalpur, Gakhal Dhariwal and Jalandhar would be declared nodal schools for selecting students for appearing in the NDA examinations.

“As many as 200 students appearing for their plus two examinations, who had the potential to clear the NDA test, were identified. Ten lecturers from these schools were asked to impart training to them in various skills,” he added.

Pannu said after an intense year-long training, 59 youths were found to be qualified to take the examination and this batch would be taking their examination on April 18.

To make sure that these students had access to the best trainers, the services of Major-Gen G.S. Sohi (retd) were sought. He, along with Brig K.S. Dhillon (retd) and Lieut-Col Manmohan Singh (retd), deputy director, Sainik Welfare, and 15 lecturers, will conduct special classes from April 1 to 17 for these students after their board examinations in March, he said.

The DC said they were hopeful that a majority of the students would be able to get through the examinations, which would further encourage others to pursue a career in the forces.

In case of economically weak students and those coming from far-off areas, the administration will bear the cost of board and lodging, he added.

“The CM has assured me that this scheme would be replicated in other districts even if a fraction of the candidates make it to the academy,” he said.

From this session on, the nodal schools have been increased to seven and will include the government schools at Nihalewala and Phillaur. Coaching classes will begin in all these schools from May 1 to June 5 and 100 students would be selected from here, he said.

Soon: Direct pipeline to ease city’s LPG woes

Jalandhar, March 17
The recent incidents of LPG shortage in the region due to fog and delayed transportation may not recur after June. The 273-km-long LPG pipeline project starting from Panipat refinery to the IOC bottling plant at Suchi Pind here is likely to be commissioned by June, ensuring a reliable, safe and round-the-clock supply of cooking gas.

The underground pipeline has already reached Suchi Pind and the employees here can be seen laying pipes underground and connecting the gaps using heavy and hi-tech machinery. Huge machines are loaded down the ditches for boring, fitting and alignment of pipes.

The project that is coming up at a cost of Rs 186 crore has been engineered so well that it is amazing to witness the process of laying pipes. The officials said the cross-country lines have come underneath canals, waterworks, roads, agricultural fields and constructed areas without disturbing any construction or traffic. However, a few ditches have been dug up at places near Nangal Shama on the Hoshiarpur road.

According to sources, the pipeline would also connect a bottling plant at Nabha, thereby improving the supplies in that region. The project which began in November last year is likely to be one of the finest and the fastest plan of the sort executed till now.

The officials disclosed that the plan had been executed with such a precision that any pilferage is not possible. DGM constructions H P Sahi said, “It will be a liquefied gas under very high pressure which cannot be dug out at any points. Besides, there is a technology that can immediately detect any leakage and even locate the points from where it is taking place”.

He added, “It has been certainly one of the most challenging tasks. Once accomplished it could defy any supply problems caused due to traffic snarls, climatic conditions or strike by the employees”.

According to the reports published in a section of the press today, Master Mohan Lal had tried to contact Jatinder Singh on telephone, but the latter did not respond. The minister also went to Jatinder’s house, but couldn’t meet him. Finally, the minister reported the matter to the privilege committee of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, added Thakur.

The carefree attitude of the private bus operators is giving a tough time to the residents of Bet area as the former do not take their buses to the main bus stand despite repeated requests. The passengers are forced to get down on the way causing inconvenience to them.

In a press release issued today, Bet Bhalai Committee president Ajaib Singh Boparai and general secretary Satish Rana stated that the area was backward and a majority of the people were living hand to mouth.

They said the villages of the area were not directly linked to the main bus stand of Garshankar through roads and the villagers had to spend more in order to reach government offices, including those of subdivisional magistrate, mandi board, DSP, etc.

Lending her support to the Jalandhar cantonment board employees, chairperson of the Central Cantonment Board Employees Union Santosh Chaudhary asked the officials of the Vajra Corps to fill up vacant seats and provide necessary infrastructure and equipment support to safai karamcharis.

After interacting with the employees, Chaudhary held a meeting with the sub-area officials and asked them to fill up the vacant 155 posts.

“The exploitation of employees will not be tolerated. More than 30 employees, who were working on daily- wage basis were getting a paltry sum of Rs 2,200, which was not enough for making both ends meet,” said Chaudhary.

Proper equipment would ensure safety of safai karamcharis, she added. Chaudhary asked the sub-area commander Brig BB Patil to send her a report on the matter within three days.

Representatives of cantonment board Sweeper Union and Cantonment Board Class IV Union also attended the meeting.
