Bathinda, March 15 Col P.K.singh, Col Sukhwir Singh, Supriti Bindra and Sabia Akhtar cornered most of the prizes in different categories including fresh and dry flower arrangements, ornamentals, bonsais and cut flower. The best entries in each section were judged by a penal of three experts and dry and fresh flower arrangements received large number of entries. “Say it with flowers’, was the message at the show as people talked about different flowers, elegantly done up gardens, varieties of blooming exotic flowers, brilliantly displayed cut flowers and stylish flower arrangements. The creativity was at its peak at the “on the spot” competition for imaginative flower arrangements by officers wives and children between 12 to 18 years of age which was another unique feature of the flower show. President Chetak AWWA, Rashmi Sujlana felicitated the winners of the competition and gave away the prizes to the winners in each category. |

Bathinda, March 15 About 200 students, excelling in academics, sports and cultural activities and toppers were given prizes by Jaspal Singh, Special Secretary (Higher Education) Punjab who was chief guest at the function. Kanika, a student of B.Sc (Third Year) was adjudged ‘Best Student’ for overall best performance in different fields. The principal of the college, R.K.Bangar in his speech announced that PGDCA (Post graduate diploma in computer education) and BCA (Bachelor’s degree in Computer Application) courses would be introduced from the coming session. As many as 19 students were conferred the roll of honour, 20 students were for awarded for meritorious performance in academics, 63 students were honoured for outstanding performance in sports and 56 for bringing laurels to the college in cultural activities. Further, 125 students who stood first and second in various internal examinations were also awarded. Besides the outstanding students, Surjeet Singh, Head of Physical education Department, who was a member of the Punjab employees Volleyball team that won the gold at the National Championship was also honoured. It may be recalled that the college had introduced special fees of Rs 210 only two days ago, inviting loud protests from the student community. The students were agitated as the hike was too much, especially in view of the fact that a substantial number of students belonged to the scheduled castes and other poor and vulnerable sections of the society and not able to bear this additional burden. However, it may be mentioned here that Rs 100 was to be paid to the University while Rs 100 was charged for paying the salaries of part time teachers and Rs 10 is charged on the orders of the DC for the Flag Day. The chief guest at the annual party refused to speak on any issue giving reason that the Assembly was in progress. |

Protest against Parveen’s arrest
Mansa, March 15 The police had claimed that Parveen Kaur admitted that she was ready to become a human bomb. It may be mentioned here that Bhamme Kalan is the native village of Parveen but now, she had been residing in Patiala for her study in Mohindra College, Patiala. Villagers and family members of Parveen claimed that she was being involved in a false case. They blocked the traffic on Mansa-Sirsa road for few hours. Leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), Gursewak Singh Jawaharke, was leading the protest. Later, Sukhpal Singh Barar, SP, and DSP Amarjeet Singh reached on the spot and assured the people that justice would be done. |

Bathinda, March 15 Eco-friendly farm technologies evolved by various departments of the PAU would also be showcased for the benefits of the farmers. Sukhbir Singh Badal, president, Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) would be the chief guest on the occasion. According to Dr Gurmit Singh Buttar, director, PAURRS, “The Department of Horticulture will show drip irrigation techniques in orchards and shrink wrapping of citrus fruits. New techniques for propagation of different fruit plants, like ber, citrus and guava in poly bags. New varieties of guava (Arka Amulaya), grapes (Punjab Purple and Flame Seedless), pear (Punjab Soft and Punjab Nector), ber (Wallaiti), peach and plum will also be demonstrated for the farmers. Department of Vegetable Crops will show fruits samples of different varieties of chilli, tomato, capsicum, brinjal, turmeric, cucumber, potato and peas. The Department of Landscaping and Floriculture will sell seeds of different varieties of flowers. New varieties of aromatic and medicinal plants will be displayed by the Department of Agronomy. “Efficient water management techniques in kharif crops, live demonstration of the zero tillage cultivation of maize-wheat and use of herbicides will also be demonstrated,” said Buttar. The Department of Entomology will focus on bio-control measures against crop pests and Integrated Pest Management in different crops. It will also demonstrate safe use of pesticides in different crops and stored grains. Department of Farm Power and Machinery will give demonstrations of various machines such as pulverizing roller, multi-crop planter, paddy transplanter, nursery seeder, cotton ridge planter, self propelled sprayer, garlic planter and many others. Buttar informed, “A competition of farmwomen for knitting and other household operations would be held. A competition of farmers in which farmers would bring their produce of crops, vegetable and fruits will also be held. A hug exhibition of private farm implements industry will also be on display.” |

Lachman, resident of Ajit Gill village of Moga, took refuge at the house of his relative at Bazigar basti. Ashok Kumar identified him and with the help of some youth, managed to overpower him and produced him before the authorities. |

Moga, March 15 According to sources, the incident took place when Jagir Singh (12) and Phool Singh (13) were going to the Government School on a bicycle in the morning. A tractor-trailer coming from reportedly hit the rear of the bicycle. Jagir died while Phool sustained fractures. |
