Garbage: Burn ban goes up in smoke

The directions issued by the deputy commissioner about imposing a ban on garbage burning are openly being flouted right under his nose. A Tribune team noticed garbage being burnt in and around the container lying right behind the district administrative complex on Monday evening.

Overseas Fund
Dollars fuel drive against drug addiction
Jalandhar, March 11
NRIs came to the aid of the district administration and deposited Rs 8 lakh in the Red Cross Fund for its special drive against drug-addiction. Surjit Singh Toot, an NRI settled in California, donated Rs 2.50 lakh and assured more financial help for the noble cause by collected from his US based friends in the near future.

Snatchers spoil Bangalore woman’s wedding trip

Attending the wedding of her Jalandhar-based nephew proved costly to a Bangalore-based lady Rajwant Kaur. Rajwant had to undergo a bad experience during her visit to the city when two motorcycle-borne youths snatched her leather bag containing Rs 1.5 lakh and several other valuable items including her passport on Monday night.

Himmat Singh is new IG of BSF
Jalandhar, March 11
An IPS officer of the 1980 batch from UP cadre, Himmat Singh, has assumed the charge as inspector general of Punjab frontiers of the Border Security Force. He took over the charge from the outgoing IG Arvind Ranjan and held an operational conference with DIGs and commandants giving them tips on effective prevention of smuggling, infiltration and illegal activities.                                 Himmat Singh

SD seniors get perfect Vidayi

Prem Chand Markanda S.D. College for Women organised a farewell ‘Vidayi 2008’ for the outgoing students. While Sargam won the title of ‘Miss S.D. College for Women’, Rupali and Seep were declared first and second runner-ups, respectively.

Students not happy with maths paper
Jalandhar, March 11
The students who appeared for class X mathematics examination conducted by CBSE today alleged that a question in a set of papers was out of syllabus. The students, who got a question paper of code number, 3 said that their question number 24, based on geometry, was out of syllabus.
