Errors found in CBSE class XII English paper
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 11
Students who appeared for the CBSE class XII English paper on Monday found the paper rather easy to write. Though teachers and some students complained of many spelling and grammatical errors in the core paper.

“Some questions were unclear. For example, the question mark was missing in question 6 in set-3. In section B, there was a question, which asked, if there should be more old homes for aged? But instead of the question mark it ended with a full stop and there was an article where ‘the’ was dropped in the phrase ‘Joint Family System,” said Udita Ganguly, head of the English department.

“There were a lot of grammatical errors in the paper and some questions did not make sense, they were vague, we are a bit disappointed with the paper,” she added.

However, according to majority of students, the paper was overall an easy one. Mira Sethi from DPS R.K. Puram says, “The questions were easy and the paper went well however, the paper did have some glaring grammatical errors. The other papers are also fine so far but the physics paper was extremely tough.”

New Delhi, March 11
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit assured a statue of Baba Baghel Singh will be installed at Tis Hazari.

All sites of gurdwaras and other religious places of Sikhs community were identified in Delhi during the period of Baba Baghel Singh in 1783.

Also more gas-based power plants
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 11
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit announced that the Delhi government would set up more gas-based power plants to overcome power shortage in the Capital.

She was speaking at a function in connection with laying the stone of 108 MW gas-based power plant at Rithala.

She said that power scenario was grim in the national Capital, before privatisation of power in 2002. Reputed power companies hesitated to adopt power reforms in Delhi. But soon after privatisation, power scenario changed. In the last few years, power supply has considerably improved.

Dikshit hoped that privatisation of power would go a long way in solving Delhi’s power problems. The increasing population of Delhi has resulted in an increase in power demands.

During peak seasons, the demand for power rises up to 4,200 MW. Delhi has to depend on other states for 3050 MW. Sometimes Discoms have to purchase costly power from other states to meet the requirements.

The state government would set up more power plants in the Capital to reduce dependency on other states.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh would lay stone of 1,500 MW power plant at Bawana this month. The state government would also set up 750 MW power plant at Bamnauli. It would receive 750 MW power from Jhajjar power plant. The city would provide sufficient power before the commencement of Commonwealth Games.

Saying that Delhi was on way to become a power surplus state, Dikshit called on consumers to co-operate to make Delhi’s power sector a model for the country. She added that the Capital would have over 8,000 MW power supply at its disposal by 2010.

Row over compensation persists
Aarti Kapur
Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, March 11
The long-pending controversy about the refunding of compensation of the land acquired by HUDA in 17 villages on the outskirts of Gurgaon district has still not been resolved.

The farmers of these villages are confused whether they have to reimburse the extra amount of compensation paid to them as per the direction of the court or go by the assurance of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda who promised to look into the matter.

The affected villagers met union minister of state for defence for production Rao Inderjeet Singh here today who constituted an 11-member committee to present their case before the Haryana government for resolving it amicably.

The HUDA had acquired the land in 17 villages for the development work about eight years ago and gave compensation to the villagers as per decided by the department.

As most of the farmers were not satisfied with the amount of the compensation, they approached the lower court for enhancing their compensation. The lower court gave decision in favour of villagers and increased the amount of compensation.

After that HUDA filed a petition in the High Court against the order of the lower court and the court in its verdict reduced the compensation and directed HUDA to recover the increased amount paid to the farmer.

After this decision, some of the villagers returned the increased compensation amount of Rs 20 crore.

Singh said that he would also ask the government to fulfill its commitment made to the affected farmers of the area.

While asking about the construction of subways on the NH8, Singh said that a team of NHAI would soon visit the area to identify the places where these subways would be constructed.

On the plea of the residents of Palam Vihar whose houses were being demolished for constructing a road, Singh assured that he would take up the matter with the government and if possible get the road constructed on the vacant area lying adjoining to these houses.

Probe sought into workers’ deaths at Games village
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 11
The reported deaths of some labourers at the Commonwealth Games village site in the Capital has caused considerable concern among workers’ organisations, medical fraternity and the authorities concerned. It is suspected that they are dying due to some infection.

The Commonwealth Games Citizens for Workers, Women and Children (CWG-CWC) today demanded from Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to look into the deaths.

They urged her to set up an investigation team, a monitoring committee and health infrastructure at the sites.

They also demanded compensation for the next kin of the deceased. The CWG-CWC sought that the workers’ rights must be protected.

“Over 50 workers have died at the Commonwealth Games site at Akshardham,” said Kapil from the Youth for Justice. “We cannot prove it as we do not have access to the site. But we have substantial poof to back our demand for an inquiry into the deaths.”

The Youth for Justice has camped around the site for six days and has documented interviews of some labourers.

“Most labourers are unregistered,” said Anjali Alexander from Mobile Crèches. “The Delhi Construction Workers Welfare Fund has allocated Rs 120 crore to be spent on these people.”

“Asiad 1982 is remembered for its labour violations and the sub-human living conditions of workers and their families,” said Devika from Mobile Crèches. “Recognising this challenge, the CWG-CWC dialogued with stakeholders over the last 8-10 months.”

In the video documentary shown by the organisation, workers have accepted that the conditions at the CWG village are not livable.

“Many people have died here either due to disease or accident,” said one of the workers in the documentary. “I was really scared and left the place,” he added.

“We are trying to meet the concerned officials to voice our concerns. We have already sent letters to the respective authorities,” said Anjali.

“Our organisation does not want to disrupt the construction work and that is the reason we are not planning any public action. We want the Commonwealth Games to be remembered pleasantly and not for the wrong reasons,” she added.

Junk food colon cancer risk
Ravi Bhatia
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 11
If you are a woman and fond of junk food, you could be inviting trouble. A recent study has shown that lifestyle changes and overdependence on junk food is leading to an increase in the incidence of colon cancer.

It would be significant to note that out of the total patients diagnosed of colon-rectum cancer, the number of women patients is double the number of men, says Dr Amit Bhargava, senior oncologist at MaxHealthcare.

Colon is a five feet long muscular tube which joins the small intestine and colon cancer is commonly used to describe colon-rectal or bowel cancer.

The known symptoms of the disease include abdominal pain, diarrhea and constipation, blood in the stool and decreased appetite.

Ironically in a majority of the cases, the symptoms go unnoticed by the patient and the cancer spreads out to the lymph nodes.

According to medical reports, there has been an increase in the total number of patients diagnosed with colon cancer in the last five years, where the number of women exceeds men.

“On an average, five to six patients are diagnosed with colon cancer every month, whereas four out of six patients happen to be women,” says Dr Bhargava.

Changes in lifestyle and diet are considered to be the cause of killer cancer with higher pre-disposition in women.

“Urban women these days consume less roughage and fibre thereby inviting the threats of colon cancer. Earlier genetic causes were the sole reason for colon cancer in women but today drinking and smoking habits in young women aggravate the problem,” says Dr Bhargava.

Checking for blood in the stool is the simplest method to screen colon cancer along with sigmoidoscopy, in which a flexible optical device is used to examine the inside of the rectum and colon.

The doctor can also determine the presence of lumps in the rectum by a physical check-up of the patient.

“Surgery is the only treatment for colon cancer, followed by chemotherapy depending on the nature of the case. Radio frequency ablation treatment is given to the patient, if the cancer cells spread to liver,” explains Dr Bhargava.
