With an eye on the general elections, union railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav expectedly reduced passenger and freight rates across the board in his budget proposals for 2008-09 and announced the biggest ever annual plan for the gigantic system with an investment of Rs 37,500 crore.

Three months after the Punjab and Haryana High Court observed the Moga sex scam apparently was “nothing less than the Jammu sex scandal”, the Central Bureau of Investigations today arrested then Moga’s senior superintendent of police Davinder Singh Garcha, along with then superintendent of police (headquarters) Paramdeep Singh Sandhu, for alleged involvement in the scam.

Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N today said it would not join the planned PPP-led coalition government in Pakistan but would extend outside support in the clearest sign yet on its role after the two opposition parties joined hands after sweeping victories.

India today successfully test fired its first-ever undersea nuclear capable ballistic missile off the eastern coastal city of Vishakahpatnam, catapulting it to the select band of five countries equipped with the technology.

LS approves Central rule in Nagaland
New Delhi, February 26
The Lok Sabha today approved the imposition of President’s Rule in Nagaland, where the Assembly election process is currently on. A resolution ratifying the Centre’s decision was okayed by the House without any discussion and by a voice vote amidst din created by members who were creating a ruckus on some issues.

Courts should not interfere in economic policies: SC
New Delhi, February 26
On the day of rail budget with the government laying down a road map for several of its economic policies, the Supreme Court in a significant judgement said the judiciary must keep itself away from the executive and legislature’s economic decisions and give greater “latitude” to the laws on fiscal and tax measures.

The Supreme Court today upheld the punishment awarded by the Punjab police to its assistant sub-inspector for indulging in the theft of petrol as it found a series of court proceedings at various level on his plea untenable under the law.
