SC upholds punishment to Punjab cop
Legal Correspondent

New Delhi, February 26
The Supreme Court today upheld the punishment awarded by the Punjab police to its assistant sub-inspector for indulging in the theft of petrol as it found a series of court proceedings at various level on his plea untenable under the law.

A disciplinary committee of the Punjab police had punished its ASI Hari Singh by withholding his five annual increments with cumulative effect while ordering recovery of half of the cost of 3,339 litres of petrol “stolen” by him in 1993 by making wrong entries in the logbook.

He had challenged the decision in a suit before the civil court in Ferozepur, which set aside the inquiry committee proceedings against him on some technical grounds.

The district Judge, Ferozepur and the Punjab and Haryana High Court also upheld the civil judge’s ruling.
