Implementation of VAT Act in state needs a facelift: Vashisht
Phillaur, October 14 Talking to newsmen here on Sunday, he explained his suggestions and said though VAT in Punjab is more than two years old, the people are still not aware of its features. Unlike the repealed Sales Tax law, VAT is a simplified system with a self-policing mechanism. There is far less harassment to the taxpayers as it offers a self-assessment model. For instance, TOT (Turnover Tax) being a simplified scheme for small businessmen and traders which requires payment of lumpsum tax with hassles accounting effort, more and more people can avail its benefit if they are made aware of it. He said, “In the present times, web sites have become a good and easy source of information. The official site of the excise and taxation department is in a very poor state as far as maintenance is concerned. It took almost six months to revise the name list of persons of the new administrative setup. Acts and rules put on the website are not updated when any amendment takes place. Facts are confusing. Modern industry and businesses do refer to websites. So, it will be better if a mechanism which maintains and upgrades this site is established.” — OC |
