Survival Battle
Competition from migrants worries local labourers

Hoshiarpur, October 7
Facing a competition from the migrant labourers, who recently migrated to Dasuya, the existing vegetable sellers, rehriwalas, rickshaw pullers and other labour classes staged a protest rally here today. The protestors said the migrants have acquired their work by offering competitive rates.

The protestors criticised the state government for not keeping a check on the flow of migrant labourers to Punjab from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Bengal and Rajasthan.

Presidents of Rickshaw Puller Union and Vegetable Fruit Seller Union, Harmesh Singh and Gurbax Singh, respectively, said the migrant labourers had a very low cost of living as compared to Punjabi labourers. “Around 15 of them live together in a single room without electricity and water supply facilities.”

“Besides, they sell goods on meager margins and charged less rates for rickshaw service. Moreover, many criminals allegedly had joined them for crime resulting in increase of thefts and kidnapping cases,” they added. Demanding deportation of migrant labourers living in the area the protestors said the labourers have no ration and identity cards.

Meanwhile, local MLA Amarjit Singh Sahi said he had called a meeting of local and migrant labourers on Monday and would sort out an amicable solution to the problem. However, he agreed that only migrant labourers with ration or identity cards should be allowed to continue with their work. — OC

Police inaction alleged in land fraud case
Tribune News Service

Amritsar, October 7
Gurdial Singh, a resident of Antaryami Colony in Amritsar, is moving from pillar to post for the arrest of three accused who have defrauded him in an alleged land fraud case after the police failed to arrest the trio, who was moving freely even after registration of criminal case against them.

Giving the details of the case Gurdial said Lakhwinder Singh in connivance with his two accomplices Jasbir Singh Sethi, a deed writer, and Harpal Singh had induced him for purchasing land in the revenue estate of Sultanwind area of the city. He alleged that before purchasing the plot he had approached Patwari Bachittar Singh in this regard. But, Bachittar did not reveal the true facts regarding the ownership of the said property as he was also hand-in-glove with the accused.

The complainant said he had paid Rs One lakh after the plot was registered in his name on April 29 and asked the accused to get him the possession of the land. However, the accused dilly-dallied on the issue stating one reason or the other.

When I came to know that the plots were part of the land of the Gurdwara Satlani Sahib, I asked Lakhwinder to refund the amount on July 29. However, he refused to refund the amount saying that he was the original owner and there was nothing wrong in it,” added Gurdial.

“I have filed a complaint with the police in this regard and after an enquiry the police registered a case against them on September 29. Even after the case was registered the police did not arrest the accused who were moving freely,” said Gurdial.

When contacted the SSP Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh said he had directed the concerned SHO in this regard and the accused would be arrested soon.
