Lara’s ton goes in vain
Lahore, November 14 Lara scored a defiant 122 runs, his 33rd Test hundred, but it was not enough to stop West Indies from suffering their 16th defeat in their last 23 Tests since May, 2004. Pakistan lost opener Mohammad Hafeez, trapped leg before by Corey Collymore, before Imran Farhat and Younis Khan completed the formality of scoring 13 runs for victory after West Indies were bowled out for 291 runs shortly after tea. Young pacer Umar Gul finished with match figures of nine for 164 after his five for 65 in the first innings. Man-of-the-match Gul, who bowled a testing line and got reverse swing on a low-bouncing and slow-paced pitch, made up for the absence of strike bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif, banned for a doping offence. The Test was a personal triumph for the 37-year-old Lara, who made his first hundred in Pakistan at the venue where he made his debut 16 years ago. The left-hander, who also got a first-innings 61, notched up his third successive century against Pakistan after scoring two against them last year at home. Pakistan took a big lead of 279 runs in a first-innings total of 485 that included 192 from Mohammad Yousuf in response to the visitors’ disappointing total of 206 on the first day. West Indies were at the rough end of some controversial umpiring decisions by Sri Lankan Asoka de Silva which looked questionable on television replays. His decision not to refer a line-stumping appeal when Mohammad Yousuf was batting on 53 significantly swelled Pakistan’s first-innings total. West Indies lost their last six wickets for 53 runs either side of tea after Lara, resuming on 28 with his team on 74 for three, had put on 137 with Shivnarine Chanderpaul (81). His dismissal on 238 trapped leg before by part-time spinner Hafeez after a mixture of astute defence and superb stroke play when he hit 19 fours saw the innings fold up quickly. His hundred took him into third place in the list of most Test centuries behind Indians Sachin Tendulkar (35) and Sunil Gavaskar (34). Lara said he had gone out to bat for the whole day but it did not happen. “Losing six wickets before lunch on the first day put us behind in this game. We didn't apply ourselves after winning the toss,” Lara said. “We have to just move on and remain optimistic. We have the bowlers to take 20 wickets. We have to get enough runs on the board.” Dwayne Bravo and Denesh Ramdin fell before tea and Chanderpaul went by miscuing a pull to deep midwicket after scoring his 39th half century. Pakistan’s Shahid Nazir took six for 105 in the match. The second Test starts on Sunday in Multan. Scoreboard

Sydney, November 14 Trescothick has failed to find form in his two innings on the Australian tour, scoring two against the Prime Minister's XI and eight against New South Wales in the three-day match that finished in a draw here Tuesday. The Somerset opening batsman failed to return to the field with his England team-mates Tuesday after the England first innings. Trescothick suffered a stress disorder that forced him to take a complete break to recover during England's India tour last February and the subsequent English summer. Shortly after the team's arrival for the Australian tour, Trescothick told reporters he was over his illness, but was bracing for Australian vitriol from fans in this month's Ashes series. He said he had arrived in Australia feeling refreshed and brighter than when he left England's tour of India last February, when he was burnt out and unable to enjoy the game. Anderson, who has been given the nod by team selectors to play in the opening Test in Brisbane next week instead of Sajid Mahmood, was on a hat-trick at one stage after dismissing O'Brien (2) and Daniel Smith (0), but youngster Moises Henriques saw off the attempt. Anderson finished England's best bowler with 3-40 off 10 overs. It was a useful exercise for the tourists as they sought time to acclimatise to the Australian pitch conditions in the countdown to the November 23 Test opener at the Gabba. Pietersen scored 122, but more importantly spent 258 minutes' batting, while skipper Andrew Flintoff compiled 62 in 105 minutes. Alastair Cook looked impressive in his knock of 59 and opener Andrew Strauss put together 50, but there were batting failures for Marcus Trescothick (8), Ian Bell (0) and Paul Collingwood (5). The bowlers got in lengthy bowling spells under a hot Australian sun, with pace spearhead Steve Harmison taking 3-95 off 20 overs and Anderson taking five match wickets. The spinners Panesar (0-38 off 13 overs) and Ashley Giles (1-32 off 8 overs) got useful workouts as they vie for the one spinner's spot in the England Test team for Brisbane. No result was expected from the practice match with England seeking to play 14 of their 16 players to gain maximum preparation time, so as a result the match did not carry official first-class status. — AFP |
Team India arrive in SA
Johannesburg, November 14 Dravid said the batsmen had scored big hundreds on previous tours to the country including the 2003 World Cup and he could not see why they could not excel one more time. “As far as I can remember, we did very well in the 2003 World Cup where most of our batsmen made major runs. On previous tours too, we had some big hundreds,” Dravid told reporters on arrival here this morning. Dravid backed up the robust defence of his batsmen by encapsulating the general performance of India in South Africa. “Our batsmen have enjoyed batting on South African pitches because it affords you the ability to play shots. Of course there are a few shots you need to avoid but there is also a wider range of shots to choose from.” Dravid arrived with the 16-member Indian squad for the gruelling tour comprising five one-dayers and three Test matches. India have never won a Test in South Africa on three previous visits and only once in a one-dayer. Indeed, South Africa, always a pugnacious unit, are very difficult to beat in their own homeyard, losing just 14 matches out of the 70 played since their readmission to international cricket.

Chautala group’s recognition by IOA jolt to Haryana govt
Chandigarh, November 14 The IOA decision has come as a big blow to the ruling Congress-backed HOA headed by Mr Naveen Jindal, MP. It has come at a time when Mr Jindal’s faction is planning to host the Haryana State Games at Kurukshetra from November 19 to 22. The ruling party supported group had not only taken over the reigns of the HOA some months ago but took the “forcible” possession of the Haryana Olympic Bhavan in Panchkula. Even the Haryana Sports Department has chalked its programme of coaching-cum-training of Haryana contingents for the ensuing National games to be held in Guwahati from February 9 to 18 next year. The Chautala group had announced holding of its state games at Sirsa from December 28 to 30 this year. The fight for control of HOA has put the sportsmen and women of the state in a quandary as they do not know in which State Games to participate and from which to stay away for fear of subsequent disqualification. While those participating in the state sponsored games would be entitled for scholarships and other facilities, including training in the Department sponsored camps, others throwing their weight with the Chautala faction may have to content without such government largesses. While the Abhay Chautala faction maintained itself it to be “genuine” body, other group contested the claim holding that election of Mr Navin Jindal as President, Mr P.V. Rathi as General Secretary to be legal and in accordance with the provisions of the constitution of the HOA. Sources reveal that even the IOA President, Mr Suresh Kalmadi, who also belongs to the same party — Congress — as of Mr Navin Jindal, was not much of help in getting the new body recognised. Instead, the IOA had issued a letter denying ex-officio members of the State Olympic Associations voting rights at the time of election of office-bearers. Both in Punjab and Haryana, all the District Olympic Associations (DOAs) have the Deputy Commissioner concerned as its ex-officio President. |
Assam Rifles enter pre-quarters
Our Sports Reporter
New Delhi, November 14 In a close contest of the last but one qualifying round tie, Assam Rifles clinched the match-winner when Santa Singh powered the ball in with a stiff shot in the 10th minute. The victory margin would have been bigger had it not been for the many saves effected by Army Greens custodian Minj Bahadur. Border Security Force, Jalandhar, will meet Salgaocar, Goa, to decide the second qualifiers from the preliminary round at the Ambedkar Stadium here tomorrow. The two qualifiers would join JCT (Phagwara), Tata Football Academy, Mohammedan Sporting and Air India in the pre-quarterfinal round. Meanwhile, the Delhi Soccer Association (DSA) objected to the holding of the Children’s Day function at the Ambedkar Stadium, which forced the shifting of the Durand Cup to the Race Course ground for four days, from November 11 to 14. DSA president Subhash Chopra said here today that it was very improper to disturb one of the most prestigious tournaments like the Durand Cup just to hold the Children’s Day function, which has also caused damage to the ground. He requested Delhi Mayor Farhat Suri not to let out the Ambedkar Stadium for any other function, except for holding football matches. “The Ambedkar Stadium is the hub of football activity in the Capital. The MCD should not let out the stadium for holding cultural and other functions at the expense of football”, he added. |
PSB, IOC to clash for title

Jalandhar, November 14 In the semifinals played at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here today, Punjab and Sindh Bank defeated Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) 4-3 in the tie-breaker after match remained goal less in its scheduled time whereas Indian Oil Corporation beat Punjab Police 2-0. The first semifinal between Indian Oil and Punjab Police displayed fast hockey. In the 12th minute, Punjab Police wasted a penalty corner. In the 26th minute, Punjab Police defenders wrongly tackled Indian Oil forward Deepak Thakur and they were awarded a penalty stroke. Bikramjit Singh netted the ball giving oilmen the lead. At the half time, Indian Oil was leading by 1-0. In the 43rd minute, Indian Oil wasted a penalty corner. In the 66th minute, Indian Oil captain Deepak Thakur sounded the board with the reverse flick from top of the striking circle (2-0). In the second semifinal, Punjab and Sind Bank were assertive from the beginning while rival BPCL players took time to charge. The bankmen succeeded in keeping the ball in the BPCL’s half for most of the time in the first half but could not target well their moves and missed several chances to score. The same story continued in the second half too. |
North Zone firmly in saddle
Kolkata, November 14 With two full days’ play remaining, North seem to be within sniffing distance of the title after having opened up a mammoth 331 run first innings lead on a docile track at the Eden Gardens. Apart from Chopra’s brilliant 188, Yashpal Singh struck a fluent 77, Joginder Sharma plundered 72, while wicketkeeper batsman Mahesh Rawat remained unbeaten on 96 as North reached 627/7 at close in reply to Sri Lanka A’s first innings 296. Resuming at 321/2, North Zone lost skipper Mithun Manhas (29) in the very second over of the day. Manhas was rapped on the pad by an incoming ball from pacer Ishara Amarasinghe. Chopra and Yashpal Singh then added 88 runs for the fourth wicket before left arm spinner Rangana Herath plotted the dismissal of the discarded India opener. The 29-year-old Delhi batsman, keen to get back into the India team, struck 26 boundaries and faced 400 balls during his chanceless knock, that took all of 574 minutes. — PTI |
