New Delhi, November 11
Less than a year after he joined the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), Bibek Debroy has quit as the Secretary-General of the organisation.

According to sources close to him, Mr Debroy might take up some assignment in the government as he is understood to have got an offer from the Prime Minister’s Office.

Mr Debroy, who put in his papers yesterday, has also got an offer for an overseas assignment, the sources said.

When contacted by The Tribune, Mr Debroy refused to comment. An eminent economist, Mr Debroy had been the Director of the Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies and the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation between 1997 and 2005. He had resigned from the foundation over a controversy arising out of one of his studies which concluded that Gujarat was the most economically free state.

Later on he clarified that, the ranking was done on aggregate basis with at least three main variables and was subject to the way aggregation was done. Reportedly, it created differences with Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who is the Trustee of the foundation.

Along with Mr Debroy one of the Deputy Secretary-General’s of the PHDCCI, Mr Amirulla Khan, is also understood to have resigned. Mr Khan, who was with the CII, had joined the PHDCCI along with Mr Debroy in January this year.
