Health Department cracks whip on quacks

In view of thousands of quacks thriving in the mega city, as also practitioners of other systems prescribing allopathic medicines in an unlawful manner, the Health Department has decided to come down heavily upon those playing with the lives of unsuspecting people.

Ban on crackers flouted with impunity

The Supreme Court orders on bursting of fire crackers went up in the air as the city witnessed a Divali festival din throughout the night yesterday. The residents continued to burst noisy crackers in violation of the apex court's direction.

A memorial of police martyrs in the historical Police Lines here has got a new lease of life with the police department renovating the structure and roping in a landscaper to beautify the place with designer plantation.

5 killed in car-truck mishap
Mandi Ahmedgarh, October 22
Five persons of two related families from Mimsa and Muhamadgarh villages were killed and two hurt when their car collided with a speeding truck at Jagera village near here yesterday.

Migrant murdered
Khamano, October 22
A migrant was murdered by a youth last night at a samadhi of a pir at Kotla Badla village. According to information the deceased Ram Abad was a resident of Sampurna in Uttar Pradesh and had been residing at the samdhi for the past many years.

It is for about six years that people of Ludhiana have romanced with the idea of an "elevated road" between Jagraon Bridge and Chand Cinema. Originally, the idea was to ease the traffic on the congested roads passing in front of Ludhiana Railway Station and Clock Tower and bypass.

SC verdict on quota hailed

The Indian National Bank Employees Congress (INBEC) and the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) have welcomed the ruling of the Supreme Court that the creamy layer among the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes must not be allowed the benefits of reservation in government jobs and educational institutions.

Bairagi Mandal flays Venod Khanna

The All-India Bairagi Mahan Mandal has condemned the removal of a memorial stone from a park named after Baba Banda Singh Bahadur in Gurdaspur by BJP MP Vinod Khanna, terming it as an act of disrespect against the saint warrior.

Elevated road to be opened on Oct 25
Ludhiana, October 22
At long last, the much- awaited elevated road between the Jagraon Bridge and Chand Cinema will be opened to traffic on October 25 by the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh. The Local Bodies Minister, Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, who presided over a high-level meeting of officials, announced it here today.

PAU seeks increase in grant-in-aid

While seeking enhancement in grant-in-aid for Punjab Agricultural University (PAU),Vice- Chancellor K. S Aulakh has also complained to the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, against the alleged insulting and humiliating attitude of the state bureaucracy.

College of Agriculture bags overall trophy

The College of Agriculture (COA) bagged the overall trophy in the PAU Inter-College Youth Festival which concluded here yesterday. The running trophy for literary events was also won by the College of Agriculture, fine arts by the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities and theater events by the College of Agricultural Engineering (COAE).

Teachers welcome Divali bonanza

The Punjab Government College Teachers Association (PGCTA) and the Punjab Commerce and Management Association (PCMA) have welcomed the decision of the government to give relief to government employees in terms of 5 per cent interim relief, enhancement of the medical allowance, restoration of the old formula of commutation of pension and benefit of career advancement scheme.

No teaching at PU on Oct 23, 24

Teaching work at Panjab University shall remain suspended on October 23 and 24 to give extended holidays to the students on the occasion of Divali. However, the university administrative offices, including departments, shall remain open on both these days and examinations, interviews and meetings etc. shall take place as per schedule.

PCCTU executive members to court arrest
Doraha, October 22
Members of the executive committee of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union shall court arrest on October 31 in order to press upon the government for the implementation of their demand of the pension-cum-gratuity scheme following which the working of private-aided colleges in Punjab and Chandigarh shall come to halt from November 1.

Blood donation camp at engg college
Ludhiana, October 22
As many as 78 persons donated blood at a voluntary camp organised by the Department of Transfusion Medicine of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in association with Rotary Club, Ludhiana,at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College here yesterday. The blood donors were from amongst the faculty members and students of the college,besides people from other sections of society.

Sports meet at Akal Academy

The Akal Academy, Dhindsa, 10 km from here, celebrated its IV Inter-House Sports Meet. Samrala SHO Inderjit Singh inaugurated the sports meet. Among others who attended the meet were Jathedar Kirpal Singh Kheernian, member, SGPC, and Jathedar Darshan Singh Lopon.
