Kaler new trust Administrator
Ludhiana, September 14
Mr S.R. Kaler, Regional Deputy Director, Local Self Government, would join tomorrow as the Administrator of the controversy-hit Ludhiana Improvement Trust, which was dissolved today by the state government even as another controversy kicked up today on the public hearing of environmental clearance of the project.

Liquor contractor held, freed on bail
Ludhiana, September 14
A police team today arrested a well-known liquor contractor, Charanjit Bajaj, alias Channy, from near the gate of the District Courts complex in a case of selling liquor illegally. He was later released on bail in the evening. The contractor was declared a proclaimed offender two years ago by a local court after he did not appear in court in the case of illegal sale of liquor in 1997.
Police sources said Channy’s proclaimed offender status was known to the police recently after the list of the POs was scrutinised.

Too many tests for tiny tots
Ludhiana, September 14
Students of primary and middle classes are feeling exhausted and burdened these days due to the weekly and monthly tests. Not only students but also teachers and parents feel that the regular tests have put extra burden on children making them feel irritated, lethargic and bored throughout the day. The parents say they also have to sacrifice their weekends to make their wards prepare for the next tests.

One killed in accident
Jagraona, September 14
Bhajan Rai, a rickshaw puller, was killed in a road accident here between a car and a rickshaw. The police has registered a case against the car driver. The Sidhwan Bet police has arrested Bittu of Gorsian Khan Mohammad village and seized 15 kg of lahan and 3,000 ml of illicit liquor from his possession. A case has been registered against him.

Gujral releases hotelier’s autobiography

A former Prime Minister, Mr Inder Kumar Gujral, has released the autobiography of Mr N.S. Nanda, a leading hotelier from Ludhiana. Mr Nanda said the function was to be held in Ludhiana yesterday. However, due to the bad health of Mr Gujral the book was released in New Delhi today.

HP leader in notebook segment: survey
Ludhiana, September 14
Hewlett Packard India today said it continued to lead the notebook and desktop markets in Q2 2006. The company emerged as the overall leader in the total PC market with a market share of 20.3 per cent, said a spokesperson.

Farmers advised on agronomic practices
Ludhiana, September 14
At the one-day Regional Kisan Mela at Ballowal Saunkhri (Nawanshahr), Punjab Agricultural University scientists and farmers of the Kandi area yesterday exchanged notes on farming techniques to be adopted in their area for different crops, agro forestry and horticulture. The farmers were advised to follow agronomic practices as per the university recommendations for qualitative and quantitative gains.

Dr Manoj Sobti, a consultant neurosurgeon at Sobti Neuro and Super-speciality Hospital and former head of neurosurgery at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, has performed a key-hole endoscopic disc removal on a 35-year-old female patient, suffering from low backache for the past five years.

Prabhpreet, Mandeep emerge fastest runners

Mandeep Kaur in the girls’ section and Prabhpreet Singh in the boys’ section won the 100-m sprints to emerge fastest runners in the two-day Block-Level Rural Sports (u-16) organised by the Punjab Sports Department and Sports Authority of India with the help of Zila Parishad and the Rural Sports Club at Kila Raipur, near here, yesterday.
