The city has seen a number of incidents in which persons are robbed after administering intoxicants, indicating the presence of a 'gang' in the city. On the prowl, the gangs loots people after making them unconscious by administering sedatives. Four such incidents have occurred in the past one week.

Woman, youth killed in different mishaps
Chandigarh, September 12
A 42-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man died in two separate road accidents in the city late last night. In the first incident, Lakhwinder Kaur, a resident of Police Colony, Mani Majra, a widow of a Head Constable in the Chandigarh Police, Avtar Singh, was killed after being hit by a speeding Maruti car near the St. Kabir School, Sector 26.

For Mr D.S. Sra, an IRS officer of the 1972 batch, his appointment as Chief Commissioner, Customs and Central Excise, Chandigarh Zone, is homecoming. He will now look after three states — Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab — besides the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Mr Sra, who was some years ago Commissioner, Customs, Amritsar, also had a stint in Chandigarh.

HUDA dispatches registration cards
Panchkula, September 12
The Haryana Urban Development Authority today dispatched registration cards to all the applicants of the various reserved categories for the draw of 538 plots scheduled for September 18 and 19.

Huge demand for skilled workers in New Zealand
Chandigarh, September 12
"There has been a 45 per cent increase in the number of students applying to New Zealand," stated Mr Paul Vaughan, Trade Commissioner, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, at the inauguration of the Education Fair at the Taj today. "Students are increasingly keen to study in New Zealand. About 2500 students have been given visas this year many of which are from this region," he added.

DC tells officials to attend anti-foeticide camps
Mohali, September 12
Drug de-addiction and anti-female foeticide camps should be organised and these should be attended by senior officials, including sub- divisional magistrates. Directions to this effect were given by Mr Tejveer Singh, Deputy Commissioner, at a monthly meeting held here today.

Woman sustains burn injuries

A 23-year-old woman sustained burn injuries as she accidentally caught fire from a stove while cooking a meal at her house in Sector 8 here this afternoon. Ruling out foul play, the police said the victim, in her statement recorded with a magistrate, had stated that was an accident.

Advocate held for cheating bank
Chandigarh, September 12
The Chandigarh Police today arrested a Zirakpur-based advocate from Mundi Kharar on the allegations of duping a Sector 35-based private bank of Rs 5.60 lakh. The police said he had allegedly taken a loan from the bank by mortgaging a plot, which he later sold fraudulently.

Three held for betting
Chandigarh, September 12
The special crime cell of the Chandigarh Police arrested three persons from Mani Majra on allegations of indulging in betting over Australia and West Indies one-day cricket match this evening. The in charge of the cell, Inspector Kewal Krishan, said acting on information, a police team from the cell conducted a raid on a house in Mariwala Town in Mani Majra and nabbed three persons indulging in betting.

Proclaimed-offender couple arrested

The police today arrested a couple, declared proclaimed offenders by a court in several immigration fraud cases. The couple, Daljit Singh of Morinda and his wife Satwinder Kaur, were arrested from the ISBT in Sector 17 here this afternoon.

Booked for rash driving

The local police has booked the driver of a tractor-trailer (HR-55-0380) for negligent driving, resulting in the death of Lakhwinder Singh, a resident of Nabha village, near here.

Man held with 130 gm of opium
Chandigarh, September 12
The special crime investigation Cell of the Chandigarh Police has arrested a Mani Majra resident on the allegations of carrying 130 grams of opium. Gopal Singh Saini, alias Pala of Mohalla Dera Sahib, Mani Majra was arrested from the locality on Monday. His search led to the recovery of 130 grams of opium.

“I weigh theatre in the scale of utility. What it offers should have meaning for life that we live and also for society we live in,” observed Mumbai-based thespian, cine actor and director Rajendra Gupta. Chandigarh, September 12
An unbeaten knock of 59 runs studded with eight fours enabled Shishu Niketan to have an edge over the defending champions St Stephen’s School-45 in the third Molly Carver Memorial High Schools Cricket Tournament, being organised by DP Azad Academy at the St Stephen’s ground in Togan, near here, today. Batting first, Stephen’s scored 106 for 6 in the allotted 20 overs. Akshay Sharma (27 with two fours) and Gaurav Puri (25 with three fours) were their main scorers. Anurag contributed 17 runs.
