22 gastro cases reported Phagwara/Jalandhar, July 22 Though it is the third time that gastroenteritis has broken out in the areas, neither the Phagwara Nagar Council nor the Health Department and nor the local administration has initiated any steps to tackle the problem. When The Tribune team visited the areas today, several residents complained about contaminated drinking water and lack of sanitation arrangements. Several ailing residents said that they preferred to take the services of private doctors because of the “not-up-to-the-mark” services in the Civil Hospital here. Meanwhile, the residents of Rattanpura, headed by Parmod Kumar, Arvind Kumar and Yogesh, threatened to intensify the agitation and block vehicular traffic on the national highway if their demands regarding sanitation, disposal of sewage water and provision of clean drinking water were not fulfilled by July 27. Hundreds of residents of these areas today demonstrated against the “inefficient” working of government departments and submitted a memorandum to Phagwara SDM. Meanwhile, the Nagar Council Executive Officer Gurwinder Kaur Randhawa visited the affected areas and assured the residents of prompt action. She said she was monitoring the situation and that Municipal Engineer Satish Sharma and his team had been instructed to visit the areas and take steps for cleanliness of the localities. The executive officer disclosed that the Phagwara Nagar Council employees had found empty bags from a blocked sewerage last time, which seemed to be the work of a “mischief monger”. The Senior Medical Officer, Dr Yash Mitra, said that chlorine tablets were being distributed at the doorsteps of the residents of the affected areas. She added that the residents had been advised to take boiled drinking water. Meanwhile, in Jalandhar, about 12 cases of gastroenteritis have been reported from Telian Mohalla here, thanks to the alleged supply of contaminated water in the area. The area residents have alleged that they have been getting the supply of “dark-colour” water for the last few days. Most of the patients are being treated at various private hospitals of the city. Apart from “contaminated” drinking water, the sale of cut fruits in violation of the Health Department’s norms, has compounded the problem. |
41 ration depots ‘suspended’ in Ferozepore district Jalandhar, July 22 Interestingly, a large number of ration depots, which have been suspended on the directions of the Punjab Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Mr Avtaar Henry, were found locked during a surprise checking by the Central Flying Squad of the department. What was more interesting was that a total of 42 depots were subjected to checking by the squad, and irregularities were detected in case of 41 depots of the district. Meanwhile, the record of 11 offices of the Punjab Food and Civil Supplies Department and two of its godowns, which were also subjected to checking, was found to be “in order”. The squad members had to confront a piquant situation as seven depots of Ferozepore cantonment and city, where raids were conducted, were found to be locked and the same was the case with all six depots of Zeera township. Locks greeted the team at three of the five depots of Talwandi Bhai township and at four of the five depots of Makhu township. Four depots at Guru Harsahai were also lying closed and the same was the case with 10 depots at Jalalabad and Fazilka, where all these depots were found to be non-functional. The office of PUNSUP at Guru Harsahai was also allegedly found to be locked and the Department of Food and Civil Supplies has taken up the matter with the top officials of PUNSUP. Mr Henry has initiated a probe into the matter. |
Constable stabs taxi driver Kapurthala, July 22 According to information, Paramjit Singh stabbed Bhajan Singh after an altercation with some taxi drivers near the bus stand. The victim, who was stabbed in the chest, is stated to be out of danger and is recovering at a hospital here. Earlier, the taxi drivers reportedly deflated a tyre of the constable’s car as he had refused to remove it from the taxi stand. This had led to the altercation. After the policeman allegedly stabbed the taxi driver, other drivers blocked the road to put pressure on the police to take action against the accused. Soon DSP City Amrik Singh Powar reached the spot and assured the taxi drivers of proper action against the guilty. After the assurance, the blockade was lifted. The DSP said the head constable had been booked under Sections 323, 341, 506 IPC and 30,54,59 of Arms Act. |
Questions over neutrality of Women Cell Committee Kapurthala, July 22 According to the party, most of the 17 members of the committee belong to the ruling Congress party. Thus, they had not decided cases on merit basis, Mr Thapar alleged. Giving the example of one Ms Binder of Mansewal village in Dhilwan, he alleged that she was not provided justice by the committee. There were several other cases where the aggrieved party was not provided justice, he further alleged. Demanding the dissolution of the committee to constitute a fresh one, Mr Thapar said he had submitted a memorandum to the SSP, Mr Rajiv Ahir, in this regard. When contacted, the SSP denied the allegation that the Women Cell Committee was working partially. He claimed that most of the members, except for one or two, had no affiliations with any political party. On the contrary, he said the committee was doing appreciable work and people in the district were happy with the functioning of the committee. Mr Ahir said if a political party was not satisfied with the handling of a particular case, the working of the entire committee as a whole should not be flayed. The SSP said he had received only one complaint against the committee today itself by BSP during his tenure of nearly a year. Even then, if there was any grievance, he would discuss it with committee members, he added. |

Industrialists criticise changes in VAT forms Jalandhar, July 22 In a notification issued by the Department of Excise and Taxation, Punjab, on June 8, the Governor has amended the Punjab Value Added Tax Rules, 2005, by changing 50 of the 57 VAT forms. Mr Pankaj Dhir, spokesman of the organisation, said due to the amendment, copies of VAT forms that most traders had purchased last year had been wasted. “Even the forms have become complicated and the even experts are finding it difficult to fill up.” The representatives alleged that the burden of the official machinery had been shifted on the assesses. For minor errors, penal provisions of penalty were attracted which gave the authorities a chance to harass them, they further alleged. The VAT state advisor, Mr J.S. Bedi, said the members had requested the authorities to withdraw complications in the forms in the interest of small traders and industrialists while condemning affixation of court fees on amendment applications and a grant of the copy order. |
