Students engaged in construction work at school
Teacher suspended
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, July 18
Following surprise check of government schools, Deputy Commissioner Rahul Bhandari today ordered the suspension of the in charge of a primary school where some students were found working as helpers in construction work, besides shifting a couple of other erring school teachers.

The DC was taken aback when he saw students working as helpers to a mason engaged in some construction work at the primary school of Lehra Sodha village.

School in charge, Shinder Kaur, could not come out with a convincing reply in this regard, following which the DC ordered her suspension. He also asked the DEO to issue directions to all schools to ensure that the students were not engaged in any such job in future. At the Government Senior Secondary School, Bhucho Kalan, the DC found that school principal, Mewa Singh and his wife Mahinderjeet Kaur, who is also a teacher in the school, used to keep their leave applications with a clerk who would merely put a date on these at the time of any inspection. The DC asked the DEO to transfer the wife of the school principal to some other place. The school’s sciences laboratory was also in a bad shape and the DEO was asked to issue warning to the laboratory attendants. Taking serious note of the students being not provided with books, the DC directed the BDPO to do the needful at the earliest.

The shifting of social science teacher Ms Jaswinder Kaur was also ordered due to her poor performance.

At the primary school of Bath village students were found roaming outside and there was no proper drinking water arrangement. None of the students were wearing school uniform. The DC asked the ADC (Development) to take stock of the work of the newly appointed teacher at this school from time to time. It also came to light the number of science students was very lower in senior secondary schools of rural areas, whereas the number of teachers were lower in the schools having number of science students. Mr Bhandari has now asked the DEO to resort to rationalization.
