One dead, 8 hurt in wall collapse

Dr Khush award for PAU scientist
Ludhiana, July 12
Dr Yadvinder Singh, PAU’s senior soil scientist, has been awarded the “Dr G.S. Khush Distinguished Professor Award” for his contribution towards developing integrated nutrition management technologies based on inorganic fertilisers and organic sources for rice-wheat system. He is the ninth recipient of the award.

Goods, buildings worth lakhs gutted
Mandi Ahmedgarh, July 12
Goods worth lakhs were gutted in a fire that broke out in a rice sheller situated at Maherna-Maholi road near here today. However a joint operation by residents and the Dehlon police doused the fire well in time from spreading to tons of rice husk lying in the open.

“Sikh priests’ verdict one-sided”

In a petition to the Jathedar of Akal Takht, as many as 17 Sikh organisations have termed the verdict of the five Sikh high priests as ‘one sided and biased’ against Mr Simranjit Singh Mann and his associates who went to participate in the function at Manji Sahib in connection with the 400th year of establishment of Akal Takht.

NGOs, political bodies condemn serial blasts
Ludhiana, July 12
“Killing of more than 200 persons and injuring over 800 persons in Mumbai blasts is inhuman act and it should be condemned in strongest terms,” said the Punjab Government Pensioners Association. To provide financial assistance to the bomb victims, the association, has decided to collect funds from its members and send the money to Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.

Heavy rain throws life out of gear

Heavy rainfall experienced in the town today threw normal life out of gear besides exposing the inadequacy of infrastructure to check flooding especially in low-lying areas. However, the civic authorities claimed to have strengthened the sewerage system to cope with the future situation.

Birth anniversary of Guru celebrated

The 400th birth anniversary of Guru Hargobind was celebrated at Gurdwara Chhevi Pathshahi near CMC chowk here today. The function was sponsored by Sikh Family Club in which dastar bandhi, Gurbani kanth and kavita recital competitions were conducted category-wise.

Noted writer and lyricist, Javed Akhtar has no regrets over being denied the visa by the Government of Pakistan. He said, it was quite expected of them, as they did not tolerate any secular Muslim anywhere in the subcontinent. “People (Muslims) like me are an anathema to the votaries of two nation theory, because we shake its foundations,” he remarked.

Now biogas, compost from paddy, wheat stubble

A technology for conversion of paddy and wheat stubble into useful biogas and compost was presented to the Vice-Chancellor, Director of Research and other senior scientists of Pubjab Agricultural University here today. Author of the presentation, Prof B.S. Pathak, Director, Sardar Patel Renewable Energy Research Institute (SPRERI), Vidya Nagar, Gujrat, said the disposal of paddy and wheat stubble was a major problem in many states.

Bhattal gives 1-cr grant for Urdu akademi

Govt college students to get BPO training

The Punjab Government has made elaborative arrangements to impart Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) training to students studying in government colleges of the state to make them competent to be adjusted in professional job market and make them fit according to requirements of the corporate sector. This was stated by the Deputy DPI (Colleges), Mr Dinesh Gupta, while addressing the assembly of the first year students at SCD Government College here yesterday.

Sarabjit Sarabjit dist topper
Ludhiana, July 12
Students of Arya College for Women excelled in the BA I exam of Panjab University held in April 2006. The pass percentage of college is 98.7. Sarabjit secured 658/800 marks and got the first position in Ludhiana district as well as in the college. Monika stood second in college by getting 614 marks. Twenty two students passed in first division.

A special committee, constituted by DC, Sangrur, to probe the cause of death of two women whose kin had accused a private doctor of Malerkotla for showing negligence in performing an operation on them has completed the inquiry.
