Punjab pays tax of ministers, MLAs
Chandigarh, June 17
A sum of Rs 77 lakh was paid from the state exchequer as income tax on the salaries and allowances drawn by Punjab Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries(PSs) for 2005-06. Besides, about Rs 70 lakh was paid as income tax on the salaries and allowances of MLAs. The Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries and MLAs are entitled to salaries and certain allowances which are paid to them from the state treasury.

8 pilgrims killed as tempo hits oil tanker
Kaithal, June 17
Eight pilgrims were killed and 15 others were injured when the tempo carrying them was hit by an oil tanker near Pinjupura village of Kalayat division in this district today, the police said. The tempo was full of pilgrims, who were coming from Dera Sacha Sauda at Sirsa, and were on their way to Naraingarh in Ambala district.

We value our lady officers, says Army
New Delhi, June 17
The Indian Army today sought to dispel the impression that it could do without women officers, saying that it greatly valued their services, even as women organisations branded the force as discriminatory for the gender insensitive remarks of its vice-chief. “We are very proud of our lady officers, whose contribution is greatly valued. We would, in fact, like to further optimise their role,” Army spokesman Maj-Gen Raj Sujlana said at a press conference.
