Ex-IPS officer shot in train near Patna

Patna, June 4
An armed gang shot dead a retired IPS officer and looted cash and valuables from passengers in an air-conditioned coach of the Rajendra Nagar-Lokmanya Tilak Superfast Express near Patna junction here today, an official said.

The six robbers, who were armed with four pistols and a gun, were later captured by GRP personnel from Karbigahiya and Mithapur localities.

Superintendent of Railway Police G.P. Sinha said the six men went on a looting spree and fired a couple of shots as Anil Kumar Singh, the retired IPS officer, resisted their attempts to snatch his belongings a few minutes after the train left Rajendra Nagar terminal.

As the news spread, GRP personnel from Patna junction, four km from Rajendra Nagar terminal, rushed to the coach and took Mr Anil Kumar Singh to Patna Medical College Hospital where he died.

The GRP personnel swung into action and raided the robbers’ hideouts in the Karbigahiya and Mithapur areas on a tip-off by Rinku, who was arrested in the coach.

Besides Rinku, five of his associates, including Mintu, the attacker who confessed to having fired at Anil Kumar Singh were captured, Mr Sinha said.

The GRP men recovered some articles, including wallets and suitcases, looted from the passengers during their raids, he said. — PTI
