Cop killed, 9 hurt in grenade attacks

Srinagar, May 30
A police constable was killed and two policemen were among nine persons injured as militants carried out two grenade attacks in the crowded Goni Khan and Batmaloo areas of the city today.

Eight persons, including three policemen, were injured when ultras hurled a grenade at a police Gypsy around 12.40 pm, sources said. Constable Ghulam Nabi of the auxiliary police, who was injured in the attack, later succumbed to his injuries, sources added.

They said the security forces fired a few rounds in the air as a panic reaction to the attack. The gypsy also caught fire in the explosion.

The fire was put out by some shopkeepers in the area.

The Jaish-e-Mohammad has claimed responsibility for the attack. A caller claiming to be spokesman of the outfit told a local news agency that heavy damage was inflicted on the security forces in the attack.

In another strike, militants tossed a grenade towards the security forces in the busy Batmaloo area of central Srinagar around 4.30 pm.

Two pedestrians were injured in the explosion as the grenade missed the intended target and exploded on the road, sources said.

No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. — PTI
