Rail engine derails near busy under bridge
Jalandhar, May 13 The mishap that occurred around 6.30 am could have taken the shape of a tragedy had the engine moved onto the road beneath the under bridge. Residents use this path owing to the closure of the adjoining Domoria bridge on account of an ongoing construction of a flyover in the area. No official version was available as the railway officials involved in putting the engine back on track said any information regarding the incident could only be had from the Ferozepur Divisional Office of the Northern railways. Some people present at the site believed that the engine had hit a dead end causing the derailment. The engine was carrying as many as 16 bogies and was being shunted by the driver, Gurmail Singh. He said he tried his best to save the situation by applying brakes, but that did not make any difference due to the momentum generated by the bogies. |
Private schools must
close by 11 am, orders DC
Jalandhar, May 13 The managements of private schools falling in the district have, however, been granted the permission to fix the opening time of their respective schools as per their requirement. In case, any school management desired to keep its school open after 11 am, it would have to seek prior permission from the SDM concerned and the relaxation would be given only after an assessment about the genuineness of the request. Mr Verma has further directed that the school managements, principals, headmasters or school in charges should ensure that there were arrangements for availability of drinking water for children and that the school children would not be made to participate in any outdoor activities. The school managements, principals, headmasters or school in charges would be personally responsible for ensuring the implementation of the order. The responsibility of communicating this order to all private schools (irrespective of affiliation) has been entrusted to the District Education Officer (Secondary) and the District Education Officer (Elementary). Mr Verma has also directed the SDMs and the DEOs to conduct surprise checking of the private schools on May 17 or thereafter to check whether the orders were complied with by the schools. Any violation of the orders, according to Mr Verma, was punishable under Section 188 of the IPC, which provides for punishment with imprisonment for a term extending up to a period of six months. |
Amanpreet denies marriage to Bheora
Kapurthala, may 13 The police had claimed that the accused was married to Bheora. Sources said Amanpreet, in her application, had claimed that she never got married to Bheora and that the police had fabricated the story. The police had arrested Amanpreet saying she was the wife of the chief of the Babbar Khalsa’s India operations and had sheltered her husband after he had fled from the Burial jail in Chandigarh in 2004. One Manjit Singh, his wife, Davinder Kaur, and one Jaswinder Singh were also arrested on the same charges. Bheora was arrested by the Delhi Police on March 20 this year. He is one of the accused in the assasination of Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh in 1995. The police had claimed that Amanpreet Kaur got married to Bheora on October 13, 2005. It was added that she was studying in a nursing college in Hoshiarpur at that time. But Amanpreet, in her bail application, has reportedly stated that she was attending classes in the college on October 13, 2005 and her presence could be verified. She has added that the police managed to submit a leave application by pressurising her father. The accused has reportedly urged the court to grant her bail saying that she has to appear for her examinations in July. |
PTU gets 18,000 CET forms
Jalandhar, May 13 The applicants would be vying for nearly 9,000 seats in 41 engineering, 20 pharmacy and six architecture colleges in Punjab. While the total number of seats in these colleges is almost 12,000, 33 per cent seats reserved under the management quota would not be filled through the exam. “The number of forms received this year is 3,300 more from the previous year when 14,700 students had sent applications for the examination,” Dr M.S. Dr Grewal said the university had not yet received the AICTE notification pertaining to the reduction in the number of seats in certain colleges owing to certain anomalies. He added that the deficiency on the part of the colleges would be looked into. In case the colleges were able to fulfill the requirements, these seats might be reverted back like previous year, he said. Dr V.K. Arora, Dean, Academics, PTU, said 54 centres had been set up for the purpose, including Chandigarh and Ambala. He said more centres could be set up later as per requirements. Dr Arora added that a centre getting more than 300 candidates would be split into two. The process of issuing admit cards was likely to start soon, he added. Dr Arora said more than a dozen applications had been received for new affiliations and for increasing the seats this year. He said some of these also included applications for BBA and BCA courses. The Dean said inspections in these colleges were currently being conducted by PTU officials. He added that the reports that would be found satisfactory would be sent to the AICTE for necessary approvals. The students of architecture would be appearing for an additional aptitude test, Dr Arora said, adding that the students opting for engineering would have a wide range of streams to choose from, as the university was offering B.
