Poultry farmers stop feed supply to J&K

Irate over inaction by the Punjab Government on their demand to lift the ban on transporting of poultry products to Jammu and Kashmir by the Jammu and Kashmir Government, poultry farmers across the state have stopped the supply of feed and feed ingredients to Jammu and Kashmir.

Quackery claims another life
Ludhiana, May 10
Yet another human life has been lost at the hands of quackery in the mega city as a migrant boy Mukesh Kumar, a resident of Makkar Colony, died here last evening allegedly after being administered a couple of injections by a PCO operator. The health authorities, as well as the police, as usual, were passing the buck and no tangible action has so far been taken in this regard.

Schools to close from today
Ludhiana, May 10
Due to scorching heat, Mr Harnam Dass Johar, Education Minister, has announced that all government and government-aided schools will start their summer vacation from May 11 and schools will remain closed till June 30.

Charges fly high over
disputed land

Bhupinder Singh, founder of Baba Sri Chandji Gaushala and Gurdwara Sant Ashram, Khera Sahib, near here, has denied charges levelled against him and his father by Ranjit Singh, another resident of the village. Charging certain local leaders with harassing him, the religious leader alleged that factionalism among Congress leaders had tarnished the image of the gaushala that had recently been established for the protection of cows.

A three-month old dog named, ‘shadow’, received a new lease of life when surgeons in the Department of Veterinary, Surgery and Radiology at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University here performed a cardio-thoracic surgery to save its life.

Escalating prices hit industry

The rise in the prices of basic raw material coupled with severe power cuts has severely affected the industry. The steel prices have witnessed an increase of Rs 6,000 per tonne in one month.

Tiny and small industry here has urged the government not to impose the proposed excise duty on bicycle industry. The cultivation of sunflower can go a long way in bringing down the deficiency of oilseeds in the country, says PAU’s Director of Extension Education Dr S.S. Gill. At the same time, it can greatly contribute towards the diversification of agriculture in the state.

Several students of MA II (English) of Panjab University, Chandigarh, have demanded 20 grace marks in the linguistics paper, which was held in the morning session here today. About 60 students of SCD Government College said the question paper was not only out of syllabus but many units were ignored.

PCCTU state-level poll on May14

The state-level elections of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union will be held on May 14 at Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar. The first round of these elections was completed on May 7 when the elections of the district presidents were held in seven districts.

UK-based singer’s album released
Ludhiana, May 10
‘Dil Mang Lai’ a music cassette of UK-based singer Atma, was released in Mumbai recently. Hailing from a village near Phillaur, Atma, now settled in Birmingham, London, said this was his 12th cassette. Talking to Ludhiana Tribune, the winner of the 11th Asian sing contest in London, Atma said that this was the second release in India.                                                                                           Atma

DNA testing for cervical cancer screening at DMCH

For the first time in Punjab, the DMCH here has started detection of human papilloma virus by DNA capture assay. This virus is responsible for the cancer of the cervix. The highlight of this testing device is that it can identify 13 of the high-risk types associated with cervical cancer.
