Mumbai, May 5
Naushad Ali, one of the greatest music directors of Indian cinema who composed hit songs like ‘Mohabbat ki jhooti kahani pe roye’ (“Mughal-e-Azam”) and ‘Duniya mein hum aaye hain to jeena hi padega’ (“Mother India”), died here today at the age of 86.

Naushad, who composed music for most films of thespian Dilip Kumar and songs penned by Shakeel Badayuni, died at Nanavati Hospital where he was admitted on April 20 after complaining of uneasiness. He was discharged but had to be readmitted a week ago. He suffered a cardiac arrest this morning and passed away.

A large number of film personalities visited his bungalow as the news of his demise spread.

Hailed as a symbol of secular India, Naushad’s composition of song ‘Man tadpat Hari darshan ko aaj’ (“Baiju Bawra”), sung by Mohammad Rafi, demonstrated his grasp of classical music.
