Migrant chops off master’s head over wages
Mandi Ahmedgarh, April 30
Irritated over the delay in payment of his wages, a migrant labourer from Bihar chopped off the head of his employer, Mansha Singh, 65, a farmer of Lehra village in Ludhiana district, with a fodder chopper last night.

The day is not far when verifying the identification of a migrant labourer would be just a phone call away. The Jagraon police has launched a Nodal Cataloging Centre for identification and registration of migrant labourers in the police district.

City sweats as mercury soars

With mercury crossing the 40°C mark, the life has become difficult for the city residents. The temperature has been at least 5°C above the normal for this period of the year. One held on smuggling charge
Ludhiana, April 30
The Salem Tabri police has arrested an alleged narcotic smuggler who was smuggling poppy husk in the city. SHO Gurbans Singh Bains said nine bags of poppy husk have been recovered from the accused. He was being questioned further about the illegal trade. — TNS

The politicians, who debate in the Legislative Assemblies or the Parliament for enacting of a law, show scant respect to the passed law when they have follow it. This was evident in the shocking case of insult to National Flag in a rally organised by the Congress here. People were seen using the flag as a fan and later throwing it on the ground and trampling over it.

Cong not fulfilling poll vows: pensioners
Ludhiana, April 30
Local pensioner held a meeting here today. They criticised the Congress government in the state for not redressing their problems. They said the Congress had failed to fulfil even a single promise in its manifesto for the Assembly elections held in February, 2002.

168 pension cases settled at camp

Parshuram Jayanti celebrated
Ludhiana, April 30
The Bhagwan Parshuram Brahmnin Sabha celebrated Parshuram Jayanti at Shri Hari Om Mandir, Moti Nagar, here today. Pandit Jagmohan Sharma, district president, Congress Committee, hoisted the flag and Dr Krishan Rai performed the pooja.

600 students given books
Jagraon, April 30
As many as 600 students from about 30 schools were today given books, while 20 students were awarded scholarships. The students who achieved first, second and third position in Board examinations at the state, district and tehsil level were honoured at a function organised by the book bank, Jagraon.

As a result of rich diet and high cholesterol level, the population of Punjab is being exposed to greater risk of cardio-vascular diseases while sedentary life style, coupled with increase in consumption of junk food, has led to an alarming incidence of diabetes in the region.

Kotnis Hospital to have gynaecological wing
Ludhiana, April 30
A gynaecological wing would soon come up at Dr DN Kotnis Acupuncture Hospital, Salem Tabri. The construction of the building for the wing began here today. Mr K.L. Malhotra, secretary of the managing committee, and Dr Inderjit Singh, medical superintendent, said soon the hospital would also have a new medicine wing and an eye wing.

Meditation camp organised

The Bharat Vikas Parishad organised a meditation camp at the Viklang Sahayata Kender, Rishi Nagar, here today. Dr Shiv Kumar Sharma taught simple a technique of meditation to the participants. He said, “Human beings can rid themselves of many physical and mental illnesses through meditation.” Around 125 persons participated in the camp.

Trials to select the Ludhiana junior basketball teams (boys and girls) will be conducted here at Guru Nanak Stadium on May 3 from 11 am. According to Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, honorary general secretary, Ludhiana District Basketball Association, players born on or after January 1, 1988, are eligible for the trials.

Fiftythree boys (u-19) attended the trials conducted at Arya College ground by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association here today. The selection panel comprising Mr Chaman Lal Malhotra, Mr Sham Lal, Mr Rajesh Puri, Mr Pawan Pandy and Mr Naresh Marwaha watched the aspirants.
