20 hurt in clash at Avon Cycles
Ludhiana, April 24 Allegations and counter-allegations flowed during the day as the officials claimed that when the workers, who had recently rejoined duty after a strike, were asked to work in another part within the factory, they resorted to violence. The workers on the other hand alleged that company officials demanded their identity cards back, which they refused, and a tiff followed, leading to the clash. “When the workers were asked to work as they were sitting idle, they resorted to violence. Their allegations on turning them out are baseless,” said Mr O.S. Pahwa, MD, Avon Cycles. Among those injured are two factory officials, one police personnel and workers Vinod Kumar, Bhagat Lal, Ram Vilash, Ram, Tej Bahadur, Ram Kumar, Budhhey Raj, Lalji Pal, Hira Lal, Roshan Lal, Ram Lakhan, Tej Shri, Shiv Shankar, Ram Dhani, Ram Tiwari, Ram Parvesh. Union representatives alleged that the management had been harassing the workers who had joined duty after the strike. “They had been continually harassing workers by making them do petty jobs like washing utensils, etc. Besides, they have turned out 70 workers after they rejoined,” alleged Mr Jagdish Chand, joint secretary, Centre of India Trade Unions (CITU), Punjab. He also alleged that the management and its supporters pelted them with stones and beat the workers with rods, injuring them. “There was a clash, but it was the management who beat up the workers. How else would so many workers be injured,” he questioned. “After the recent decision by the Labour Commissioner as per which workers who had been on strike were asked to report for duty, the management had been harassing them. When we complained regarding the work other than our duty being given to workers, the management denied.” He said the union would decide its further course of action soon and would intensify its struggle. |
Teachers gun for Maheshinder’s scalp
Ludhiana, April 24 The teachers are protesting against the appointment of Mr Grewal to the post on April 21. The staff had agitated against him earlier too and the President of the SGPC, Mr Avtar Singh, had him removed on March 22. However, he has again been appointed to the same post. Ms P.K. Sekhon, Principal of the school, said, “We have been protesting against him as he talks rudely to teachers and often holds back their salaries. Last year, the teachers had observed a “black Divali” as he did not sign on the salary register. When I went on leave, I had appointed the seniormost and sincere teacher, Ms Harminder Kaur, as the acting principal. However, he removed her from the post, intimidated her and appointed Ms Inderjit Kaur Chawla, a junior teacher, in her place. However, due to her obnoxious behavior and teachers’ protests against her, the then SGPC chief, Bibi Jagir Kaur, had her suspended.” Ms Parminder Pal Kaur, a spokesperson for the staff, said now that he was back, he was making threatening calls to teachers. The teachers fear that out of vindictiveness, he might stop their salaries. “Why does he want a post in this school as it is more or less a clerical post? We want an educationist and not a politician. From tomorrow, we are starting a relay fast. Our only demand is that Mr Grewal should not be in the school.” Ms Davinder Kaur Batra, another teacher, said, “We do not know why the management has betrayed us. Mr Avtar Singh said we were like his daughters and had made us happy by removing Mr Grewal. Why then has he revoked his earlier order?” The teachers are happy that Mr Baldev Singh Mangat, president of the Government Teachers Union, Mr Charan Singh Sarabha of the Adhyapak Union, the Students Union of Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College and the Parent-Teacher Association of Nankana School are supporting the strike. The teachers said they were bothered about the loss of studies the students would suffer due to the closure of the school, but they had resolved to see their fight for the removal of Mr Grewal till the finish. They will make up for the loss in studies by teaching during the summer vacation. Meanwhile, Mr Grewal has refuted the allegations. He said the teachers had no right or jurisdiction to decide who would be member of the management. The selection of members of the Trust was the prerogative of the Board of Trustees and its president. He said, “Only a few teachers are playing to the tunes of persons who are politically inimical to me. Moreover, they have no right to play with the career of thousands of students by going on strike.” He said criminal proceedings had been initiated against four teachers — Parminder Kaur, Harminder Kaur, Davinder Kaur and Chamkor Singh — for perjury under Sections 181, 182 and 120 of the IPC for making false statements in front of a government official. He said the strike was an effort to malign him. |

LIT blames slums on police
Ludhiana, April 24 Stating that they had asked the city police chief to provide security to the anti-encroachment squad a number of times, LIT officials in their reply to the PSHRC said the SSP had refused to do so on some pretext or the other. The chairman of LIT, in an eight-page reply to the commission through his counsel, lists the dates when they had asked the SSP to provide them security. He stated that a trust Junior Engineer had lost his life five years ago, when he had gone to remove encroachments without a police force and was attacked by an alleged encroacher. The letter states that at least 50 policemen, along with anti-riot equipment, a tear gas squad and mounted police is required for removing encroachments. Until the police assistance is provided, the Trust would not be able to remove the encroachments. So the complaint should be dismissed. Residents of SBS Nagar had approached the PSHRC for redressal of their problem after knocking at the doors of LIT went in vain. Claiming that slumdwellers had made their lives miserable by using public parks as toilets, littering garbage and drawing electricity through kundi connections, the residents in their complaint to the commission had stated that there was no official action against them despite protests by them. They had claimed that their they had purchased land at skyrocketing prices in the colony developed by LIT but they were forced to live in a bad environment. They claimed that the slums had mushroomed on open spaces meant for parks in the area. The residents said jhuggis had sprung up in the area around seven years ago. These were razed earlier but came up again thanks to political patronage. Around 500 jhuggis had come up on the area and after the city centre project started, more migrants came and erected shanties. Needless to say they were creating problems for them by drawing electricity through kundi connections thereby increasing the load on the power supply. Moreover, public parks were being used as open toilets by them. |
Birmi going it alone yet again
Ludhiana, April 24 After his April 16 rally was cancelled because of the sabotage from within the party, Mr Birmi is putting in extra efforts that the April 30 rally is a grand success. Mr Birmi was quite upset and disappointed over the cancellation of his earlier rally. But the Chief Minister visited his home on April 16 and explained him the reasons for the “postponement” of the rally with an assurance that he would himself be attending the rally along with the PCC president, Mr Dullo, on April 30. Mr Birmi’s rivals worked overtime to ensure the cancellation of the April 16 rally. They are trying it once again. However, this time the Chief Minister and the PCC president have been quite categoric that they would be attending the rally come what may. They have also asked the party legislators and ministers of the district to ensure the success of the rally. They pointed out, it was the party rally and not Mr Birmi’s personal function. Most of the Congress leaders in the district have maintained a distance from the preparations of the rally. Most of them are not making their symbolic presence felt with an apparent motive of conveying the message to their supporters as what they should do. Mr Birmi on his part has made it a point to use all possible sources to ensure a good turnout. Mr Birmi on his part is learnt to have send the formal invitations to his party colleagues, including ministers and legislators to ensure the success of the rally. |
