Up in arms against the opening of liquor shops, residents of Sector 18 here staged a protest against the Haryana Excise and Taxation Department and blocked the Panchkula-Chandigarh link road for over one-and-a-half hours, today.

UT asks residents to cut power consumption

The Chandigarh Administration in a press statement issued here today has asked the general public to curtail the power consumption so as to help overcome the ongoing power crisis without letting to impose power cuts in the city.

After much controversy, the post-mortem of Irfan, who had allegedly died in police custody, was conducted at the PGI, Chandigarh, late last night. The post-mortem could be conducted after the PGI authorities constituted a panel of three doctors comprising Prof R.K. Vashisht, Dr Ashish Bhalla and Dr Yogendra Bansal. Earlier, the police recorded the statements of Usman, another under-trail in the case, in the presence of Capt Vinod Sharma, Tehsildar of Ambala.

Fire safety week begins

Tributes were paid to firemen who lost their lives in action during fire fighting operations on Martyrs’ Day at the fire station, Sector 17, today. The fire department of Municipal Corporation also started a fire safety week from today.

Cong councillors are into liquor trade: BJP
Chandigarh, April 14
Just when the elections to the local Municipal Corporation are due this year some councillors have taken fancy to the lucrative liquor trade in the city. At least three leaders of a main political party, including two councillors, are having stakes in the liquor business, said Mr Satya Pal Jain, a former MP from Chandigarh.

SI found guilty of dereliction of duty
Golf range ruckus case
Chandigarh, April 14
The fact finding inquiry marked to probe into the role of Police Control Room (PCR) officials in the incident of ruckus created at the Chandigarh Golf Association on April 9 held a Sub-Inspector guilty of failing to control the situation. The inquiry also pointed out lack of alacrity on the part of the official, who even failed to call in reinforcement, to control the situation.

Newly-wed woman ends life

A 22-year-old newly-wed woman allegedly committed suicide at her Mauli Jagran residence here this morning. The victim in her suicide note held no one responsible for this extreme step.

Students hold protest against UGC

UGC-NET aspirants organised a candle light protest at the Gandhi Samarak Bhavan, Sector-16, here today. They raised slogans against the UGC policies for NET exam. Those who had qualified the test with junior research fellowship (JRF) but were not getting scholarship because of the delay on the part of the UGC also participated in the protest.

200 clear PMT prelims
Chandigarh, April 14
The much-awaited CBSE PMT preliminary results were declared today. As many as 3,000 students from the city and 18,000 from the region had taken the examination on April 2. About 200 students from the city have made it to the main examination scheduled to be held on May 14. The cut-off this time was 306 marks.

MC to auction hotel site in Sec 35
Chandigarh, April 14
The Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh (MCC), has proposed to auction a hotel site measuring 2.62 acre in Sector 35. The authorities will finalise the reserve price tomorrow and after that the matter will be discussed at the next MCC meeting. Disclosing this here today a spokesman for the MCC said earlier the hotel site falling in the sector could not be auctioned due to unviable terms and conditions.
