47 IAS officers shifted
15 Deputy Commissioners among them
Chandigarh, April 6
With just a year to go for the Assembly elections in the state, the Punjab Government today transferred 47 IAS officers, including 15 Deputy Commissioners and one PCS officer. This is the first major reshuffle in the top layer of the state’s bureaucracy since Mr K.R. Lakhanpal took over as Chief Secretary on February 1 this year.

Contaminated water: 30 sarpanches write to CM
Abohar, April 6
Sarpanches of more than 30 panchayats are concerned over the supply of highly contaminated water in canals. In a complaint to Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today they said crops would be damaged if the quality of water was not improved.

Sting operation puts SGPC in piquant situation
Violation of hukamnama by private publisher
Amritsar, April 6
The sting operation, exposing violation of the ‘hukamnama’ (edict), pronounced by the Sikh clergy in 1998 by the private publishers has put Akal Takht and the SGPC in a piquant situation because both the institutions have failed to implement the edict in the past eight years.

Rallying around Takht Sri Damdama Sahib Jathedar Balwant Singh Nandgarh on Baluana issue, Akal Takht Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti and various Panthic bodies today warned the state government not to test the patience of Sikhs and asked it to take stringent action against “mischievous elements”.

Demand for N-plant gains ground

Immediately after the statement of the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, with regard to the setting up of nuclear power plant (NPP) in Haryana, the demand to set up such a plant in Punjab has again started raising its head.

No move to have N-power plant in Punjab: CM

In spite of the burgeoning demand and supply gap of electricity in Punjab, the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, has once again asserted that there was no proposal to set up a nuclear power plant in the state, particularly on the lines of Haryana where the Prime Minister has promised to consider a proposal regarding installation of such a plant.

Taking action against violation of norms and use of forest land, the Ludhiana Range of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau has booked an Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana, a Range Forest Officer, a Town Planner and Area Manager, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, (BPCL) and several others for opening two filling stations near Sahnewal in violation of norms.

HC summons Social Welfare Dept Secy

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Punjab, to be present in the court on May 24 to explain why the government had failed to take a policy decision as directed by the court to end reservation within the reservation system.

Two rape accused held

Two gangrape accused, Sumit and his brother Ajay, have been arrested from a house in the Suraj Nagari here by the Sriganganagar police.

NRI, father booked for fraud

The Sadar police has booked Balkaran Singh, a Canada-based NRI, and his father Dhian Singh, resident of Kalatibba village near here, under Sections 420 and 120-B IPC in a land deal case.

College holds placement programme
