CM to visit city: Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, would lay the foundation stone of the Punjab Technical University (PTU) building along the Jalandhar-Kapurthala Road on March 22. Dr S.K. Salwan, Vice-Chancellor, PTU, has said that he had received a schedule of the CM’s visit to the site at 3:30 pm. Before the function, Capt Amarinder Singh is scheduled to visit Nakodar to inaugurate a Rs 22-cr water supply project of the Local Bodies Department.

Demand: Demanding the implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations in the state, the Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes Employees’ Federation, Punjab, on Saturday urged the state government to announce gazetted holidays on the martyrdom day of Shahid Bhagat Singh and the birth anniversary of Dr B.R. Ambedkar. The federation also demanded that the 85th Amendment of the Constitution be implemented in the state.

Phagwara
Challans: The traffic wing of the Phagwara police launched its challaning drive and issued as many as 530 challans till March 18 to offenders under various categories. According to the traffic police in-charge, Mr Sukhpal Singh, three check posts were put up in Hargobind Nagar, Banga Road, and near the local bus stand to nab traffic offenders. The drive started in the morning and went on till late in the evening on Saturday.

Marriage Act: Shri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti on Saturday stressed upon the need for a separate “Shri Anand Karaj Marriage Act” for Sikhs. He said that now Sikhs should be brought under the separate Anand Karaj Marriage Act, as “Sikhs are being married before Holy Shri Guru Granth Sahib only”.
