Punjab Govt, UT cut grant to PU
Senators differ on various issues
Chandigarh, February 5
The Punjab Government and the Chandigarh Administration have reduced by about Rs 3 crore their share of grant to Panjab University for this financial year. Revealing this at the special meeting of the Panjab University Senate held here today, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof K.N. Pathak, said the move was likely to lead to a financial crisis for the university in the coming days.

Demand for mechanism to govern liquor prices
Chandigarh, February 5
Reacting to the UT Excise Policy for the financial year 2006-07, consumers of liquor have demanded a mechanism to govern the maximum retail price of different brands of liquor in the city. It was mandatory to put a cap on the maximum selling price of countrymade liquor and IMFL to avoid monopolistic tendencies and protect the interest of consumers.

Rs 60 crore to facelift Chandigarh airport
Panchkula, February 5
The Union Government has earmarked a sum of Rs 60 crore for the upgradation of the Chandigarh Airport. More land will be acquired for the airport soon. This was stated by the Union Minister of State, Finance, Mr Pawan Bansal, during a visit to the township today.

The Central Board of Secondary Education has taken important decisions for 2006 examinations and has revised the guidelines for centre superintendents and spot evaluation.

A 19-year-old married woman died in a city hospital under mysterious circumstances on Saturday. Poonam, the victim, had to be hospitalised in a critical condition after she was allegedly subjected to sexual abuse by her husband.

Kamlesh moved from sanitation panel
Chandigarh, February 5
In a move which would bring cheer to many the mayor has shifted Mrs Kamlesh from the sanitation committee to the fire and emergency services committee. A fresh list of committee members was issued on February 2, ahead of the elections for the posts of chairman and Deputy Chairman of the sub-committees.

BSNL subscribers a harassed lot

A large number of BSNL landline telephones in the Modern Housing Complex (Duplex), Mani Majra, remained non-functional for the fourth day today after workers of Airtel cut underground cables while laying new ones for its landline service.

Missing girl found
Chandigarh, February 5
Acting with speed, the Chandigarh Police today recovered a 14-year-old girl gone missing and arrested a Delhi resident in this connection. Giving details of the incident, sources in the Sector 34 police station said the victim’s father lodged a complaint with the police last night.

Woman held for carrying smack
Chandigarh, February 5
The UT Police’s special crime cell arrested a woman today on the charges of carrying 21 gm of smack. Besides this, the police arrested two persons for allegedly indulging in gambling.

Body of 8-year-old boy found
Panchkula, February 5
The police today recovered two bodies, including that of an eight-year-old boy, in the district today. The body of the boy was found from the Ghaggar riverbed along the Panchkula-Kalka highway.

Lecture on conquering anger
Chandigarh, February 5
The Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwavidyalaya, Sector 33, organised a lecture on “Conquering anger” here today. Baby show organised

Golden Bells Public School, Sector 77, here organised a baby show today. The show was brightened up by well attired tiny-tots who stole the hearts of all. Ashok Kumar bang on target
Chandigarh, February 5
Ashok Kumar of the DAV Management Committee won gold medals in the 50m and 30m events in archery competitions. He was declared the overall champion in the individual competition with 558 points in the 51st National School Games being held at DAV Senior Secondary School in Sector 8 here today. In the 50m event, Ashok collected 274 points for the first position.
