BSNL unions defer strike

The indefinite fast launched by the National Federation of Telecom Employees against alleged arbitrary transfers of the union activists by the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited authorities here has been called off while the proposed one-day strike to be observed by the BSNL Employees Union today was deferred.

Kanika Soni (25), the newly crowned Mrs Ludhiana 2005, is a perfect example of beauty with brains. She won the title here last evening after defeating more than 20 other contestants in a glittering function at the Lakshmi Ladies Club.

Data Ram Sharma Teachers to honour Data Ram posthumously

The birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh was celebrated today in the town and surrounding villages. The main function was held at Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Railway Road. Akhand Path, and Kirtan was organised in different gurdwaras in the area.

CAs’ conference begins tomorrow

The Ludhiana branch of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India will conduct a two-day state-level conference of chartered accountants on January 7 and 8. Mr P.C. Gupta, Minister of State for Company Law Affairs, will be the chief guest.

Motorcyclist killed in accident
Jagraon, January 5
Gurmeet Singh of Rajoana was allegedly killed when a Tata Sumo driven by Soni hit his motorcycle. The Talwandi Raikot police has registered a case under Sections 279, 427 and 304-A, IPC, against Soni on the statement of Surjit Singh of Bassian. No arrest has been made so far.

Robbers strike at house, injure 3
Khanna, January 5
At about 1 am today, some armed persons robbed a house in Mohalla Daharmpura Estate and injured three persons of the family. The police had started investigations and two suspects have been detained.

Compensate victim’s kin, college urged

Prof Prithipal Singh Kapoor, former Pro Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, and president, People’s Awareness Forum, today called upon the management of the Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women to pay a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of Kulwant Kaur, librarian of the college, who died as a result of a head injury caused by falling of bricks on the college premises.

Thousands won’t be able to take Class V exams

Thousands of students of Class V will not be able to take the board examinations this year as they did not submit their examination forms on time. The reason being cited is that they did not know about the last date of submission of the forms. They were not aware that the last date had been advanced.

The newly elected Chairman of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana, Mr Harish Rai Dhanda, said that he will strive for setting up of a High Court bench at Ludhiana for the convenience of litigants.

Photo exhibition on nature
Ludhiana, January 5
An art photo exhibition on nature by Tej Pratap Singh Sandhu and Ranjodh Singh will be inaugurated at Sutlej Club by Mr Surjit Singh Barnala, Governor of Tamil Nadu, on January 8. The exhibition which is the fifth in the series, has some 70 photographs on display.

Taxation Bar for abolition of audit provision

Raising eyebrows over provision of audit by chartered accountants in case of sales exceeding Rs 50 lakh, the District Taxation Bar Association (Sales Tax) put forward a demand with the newly elected Chairman of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana, Mr Harish Rai Dhanda, to get the same abolished.
