A local hosiery manufacturer has surrendered an additional undisclosed income of Rs 90 lakh and accepted a tax liability of more than Rs 30 lakh after a day long income tax survey conducted on four different premises of the firm.

Clerk’s suicide: Principal’s arrest sought

Tension engulfed Khud Mohalla this afternoon, when the relatives and friends of a clerk posted at a school, had allegedly committed suicide yesterday morning. They staged a dharna in front of the school principal’s house. He was being accused of creating circumstances for his death.

Missing traffic lights pose danger to motorists

Missing traffic light poles at Malerkotla Chowk here, and their low maintenance by the Municipal authorities have caused traffic nuisance at many places in the town. At Malerkotla Chowk two traffic poles were broken in two different accidents several months ago. But the concerned authorities did not repair these poles which are causing inconvenience to common man.

Seminar on fish farming begins

A two-day workshop on “Fisheries and aquaculture in Indus River Region-conservation, management and development of indigenous fish fauna” was yesterday inaugurated by PAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr K.S. Aulakh.

Canadian legislator concerned about drug abuse
Ludhiana, December 22
Mr Bharat Agnihotri, a member of the legislative assembly in Alberta province of Canada, has expressed grave concern over the drug abuse prevailing in Punjab. Mr Agnihotri, who basically hails from Phagwara, is now settled in Canada.

Bid to rape minor girl; three arrested
Mandi Ahmedgarh, December 22
The Sudhar police has arrested three persons, including a married couple, for allegedly conspiring to abduct, detain illegally and make an attempt to rape a minor girl of Halwara. The accused have been sent to judicial custody till January 4.

Corruption cases shock city police
Ludhiana, December 22
The registration of cases of corruption, extortion and abuse of power against a number of cops of various ranks, including two SHOs and a CIA Wing-II in charge and a number of head constables, has shaken the police administration in the city.

ASI nabbed on graft charge
Amloh, December 22
The Vigilance Bureau led by DSP Jaspal Singh claims to have nabbed an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Amarjeet Singh posted at Amloh police station, red-handed on Wednesday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000 from a woman Amarjeet Kaur, resident of Amloh.

PAU senior horticulturist Dr Jasbir Singh Randhawa has been awarded the prestigious “Dr J.C. Anand gold medal 2004” by the Horticultural Society of India for his contribution to enhance shelf life of fruits through scientific post-harvest handling of horticultural crops.

Bar associations fail to sink differences

For the second consecutive year there are two Bar associations here as the lawyers failed to resolve their differences. One group had elected its office bearers on December 8 while the other having majority in the bar had elected its president on Tuesday.

Sports promoters contribute for stadium at Jarkhar
Ludhiana, December 22
After the Mata Sahib Kaur Sports Club of Jarkhar, organisers of the annual sports festival for the past 18 years failed to receive any grant announced from time to time by a number of leaders belonging to different political parties, certain sports promoters of the area have taken a lead and contributed generously for the construction of a stadium.

Women’s hockey meet begins today
Ludhiana, December 22
Twelve teams will be vying for top honours in the annual Ranjodh Kaur Grewal Memorial Hockey Tournament for women which begins at Guru Nanak Stadium here on December 23, according to Mr Jagbir Singh Grewal, a spokesperson of the District Women’s Hockey Association, Ludhiana.

The following weightlifters have been selected to represent Punjab in the 58th men’s and the 21st women’s National Weightlifting Championship to be held at Yamunanagar from December 25 to 30, according to Arjuna awardee and general secretary, Punjab Weightlifting Association.
