CM's promise
: Mr Jugal Kishore Sharma, MLA, said here on Sunday that special economic zone (SEZ) would be established here as promised by the Prime Minister during his last visit to the Holy City. He said this was assured by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. Mr Sharma accused MP Navjot Singh Sidhu of misguiding the business fraternity.

: Dr Vitull K. Gupta, consultant physician at Kishori Ram Hospital and Diabetes Care Centre here, has been invited to present a study paper at 57th annual conference of the Cardiological Society of India and 15th Asian Pacific Congress of Cardiology to be held in Mumbai from December 1 to 4.

Arrested
: The Garhshankar police arrested Raj Kumar Khera of Kalmat village of Ropar district under Sections 379, 411 and 34 of the IPC and seized 2,800 kg of Khair wood from his possession on Sunday, according to police sources here. 

Dowry cases: Rajwinder Kaur, daughter of Sarabjit Singh of Kotli Baba Dass, alleged in her complaint that her husband Jaswinder Singh, father-in-law Gurbachan Singh and mother-in-law Gurmeet Kaur torture her for not bringing enough dowry. The Hariana police has registered a case. In another case of dowry, the Sadar police has booked Pawan Kumar, his father Charan Singh and sisters Devi and Amarjit Kaur, all of Dasuya, for allegedly harassing Usha Rani, daughter of Rajinder Kumar of Bagpur, for dowry.

Camp held
: A lok suvidha camp was organised at Government Senior Secondary School, Bhaddi, to redress the complaints of residents of as many as 23 villages falling under the Bhaddi Kanugo circle, on Saturday. Mr Parkash Singh, Parliamentary Secretary, inaugurated the camp. Mr Krishan Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, presided over.

Distributed: The Lions Club, Nawanshahr City, distributed woolen clothes among the school children of Government Primary School, Barnala Kalan village. The club members also planted as many as 150 saplings in the village. Mr Iqbal Singh, club president, presided over. 

Taken charge: Mr Gurmail Singh Sahlon has taken the charge of the District Education Officer here. A gold medalist in M.Sc (Physics) from Panjab University, Chandigarh, Mr Sahlon had served as lecturer in Physics and Principal of the local Government Senior Secondary School for more than two decades.

Science congress: The Punjab State Council for Science and Technology and the District Education Department organised Children Science Congress 2005, at Government Senior Secondary School here. Sahil of Government Senior Secondary School, Rahon, Amandip Hakla of MR City Public School, Balachaur, and Sahil Gautam of Shivalik Public School, Nawanshahr, won the top positions in junior group. Jaganbir Kaur of Government Senior Secondary School, Nawanshahr, Komal of Adarsh Bal Vidhayalaya, Nawanshahr, and Parveen Bhatt of Government Senior Secondary School, Rahon, won the first three positions, respectively, in the senior group.

CHANDIGARH

DEMANDED: The Residents Coordination Committee of the MIG Houses in Sector 40-C, has demanded the shifting of the “sehaj safai kendra” from the road separating Sector 40-C and 40-D. Since the area was densely populated, the kendra will pose a serious health hazard, a press note said.

MEETING: A meeting was organised by the youth wing of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) here on Sunday to welcome a national leader, Mr Harjinder Singh. Prominent among those present were Mr Jasbir Singh Bunty, president of the local youth wing, Mr Sushil Gupta and Mr Sham Lal Kanujia, both general secretaries.

: The District Congress Committee organised national unity day at Sector 8 here to mark the 88th birthday of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on Saturday. DCC rural chief Pandit Zile Ram Sharma and other local Congress leaders paid homage to Indira on this occasion.

Sanctioned
: Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has sanctioned Rs 5 crore for the construction of post-graduate regional centre of MDU, Rohtak, at Mirpur village near here, according Irrigation and Revenue Minister Ajay Singh Yadav. The centre, which had been running in rented accommodation since 1988, was expected to start functioning from the next academic session.

Stolen: As many as 28 bundles of iron rods worth Rs 25,000 were stolen from a shop at Bawal, 14 km from here, on Saturday night. The police has registered a case of theft on the complaint of the shop owner Sandeep Kumar.

: The Haryana Financial Commissioner, Mr Anil Razdan, has ordered the suspension of a Junior Engineer of the Irrigation Department, R.K. Bansal on the charges of dereliction of duty.

: Prerna Sharma of the town was honoured with the UGC Postgraduate Merit Scholarship by Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh at a national-level function held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on Saturday. She will get Rs 2,000 per month under the scholarship that was started in the memory of Indira Gandhi for meritorious university students.
