Army chief reviews relief work

Chief of the Army Staff, Gen J.J. Singh visited the quake-affected areas of Tangdhar and Uri in north Kashmir today and reviewed the relief measures undertaken by the troops under Operation Imdad.

Soon after his arrival at the airport here this morning, Gen J.J. Singh left for Tangdhar and Uri. He was accompanied by Lt Gen Deepak Kapoor, Northern Army Commander and Lt Gen S.S. Dhillon, GOC 15 corps, who briefed him on the progress of relief efforts undertaken by the Army. The General also interacted with the quake affected villagers of Tangdhar and Uri and the troops involved in the relief efforts, a defence spokesman said here.

Gen J.J. Singh along with Ms Anupama Singh, President, Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) visited villages of Tithwal in Tangdhar and Charunda in Uri and announced an aid package for them and their adoption by the Army. The aid package was given by Ms Anupama Singh on behalf of the AWWA, the spokesman said.

Each family of Tithwal and Charunda village has been given items worth Rs 60,000 approximately consisting of clothing, blankets, rations, utensils and construction material to include 21 CGI sheets, six bags of cement, 33 cft of timber, 24 sand bags, two foam sheets of 12 x 6 feet and one tarpaulin, through the aid package and adoption by the Army.

The Army chief also announced rehabilitation programme for Tithwal and Charunda villages adopted by the Army. The rehabilitation package includes construction of a fully furnished school, water supply scheme, electrification and community hall cum vocation training centre. After announcing the aid package for the families of Tithwal and Charunda villages, the Army chief shared some moments with the troops involved in the rescue and relief operations and complimented them for their efforts. Gen J.J. Singh complimented the Army in Kashmir for carrying out rescue, relief and rehabilitation operation meticulously.
