Jalandhar, October 27
To commemorate the maiden gallant action of the force after Independence and to pay befitting salutation to the Indian soldiers, who have made supreme sacrifice for the country, the Vajra Corps celebrated the 59th Infantry Day at Vajra War Memorial here today.

Lieut Gen Mandhata Singh, General Officer Commanding (GOC), laid a wreath at the memorial. Lieut Gen S.S. Sangra, senior most gallantry award winner, also paid homage to the martyrs. Retired infantry officers, JCOs and jawans also paid tributes to the martyred infantrymen today.

Speaking on the occasion, Lieut Gen Mandhata Singh said that the Indian infantrymen had always remained steadfast and resilient, whether it concerned protection of borders in difficult terrain conditions at Siachen, fighting anti-national elements in Kashmir and the North East or carrying out relief and rescue operations in disaster-struck regions. He said the infantry had remained a pillar of strength of the army, and was thus aptly called “Queen of the battle”.

The GOC said that if the army had stood the nation in good stead even in the difficult phase of its history, the credit went mostly to the selfless devotion of India’s gallant infantrymen who considered sacrifice a way of life. The Indian Infantry is one of the most battle-hardened and combat rich forces that has enviable records to its credit, having won most of the Param Vir Chakras and Ashok Chakras, awarded so far.

Later in the day, a Sainik Sammelan and blood donation camp was held during which the glorious past of the infantry was recalled. This was followed by a ‘barakhana’ in which the Infantry ex-servicemen from adjoining areas of Jalandhar joined to celebrate the occasion.

Later in the evening, a social interaction was organised in the Cantonment in which serving and retired infantry officers participated.

Meanwhile, the Infantry Day was also celebrated in Kapurthala. Brigadier Rajsh Singh, Commander, Military Station, Kapurthala laid a wreath at Kapurthala Imperial Service Infantry War Memorial.

NIT committee report to disclose names today

Jalandhar, October 27
The three-member Chaitley committee submitted its report on the staff of the Dr B.R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology responsible for the unchecked ragging going on in the campus.

Though NIT authorities are not coming out with the contents of the report, sources disclose that the report has indicted many hostel staff for their alleged failure in checking ragging. The committee is headed by Dr Pradeep Chaitley, and includes Dr Rakesh Chandra and Mr A.L. Sangal.

Mr K.K. Dheer, registrar, NIT, confirmed that the report had been submitted and that Mr Raghuvir Sharma, institute’s director, would open the sealed report in the presence of the four deans of the college. He declined to make any further comments.

On the other hand, the employees union of the NIT, sensing that names of their fellow employees might figure in the list, have decided to agitate against any move to implicate the accused members. A delegation of the employees union even met the director and informed him about their decision.

In another development, parents of the students arrested by the police in the Amit Kumar suicide case were forced to leave the NIT hostels where they had been staying to rally support for their kids. A letter issued by the NIT authorities asked them to vacate the campus.

The GRP team, investigating the case, had asked the NIT authorities to furnish the list of the employees on whose shoulders the responsibility of checking ragging in hostels lay. The NIT had constituted the committee to investigate and come out with the list.

The college employees however allege that the authorities had always been passive in checking ragging and had only come to the fore after the tragic suicide of the first year student.

Notices declaring a ban on ragging had been put up in the hostels much later. The failure to pay attention to the unchecked ragging had driven the student to such depression, the employees further alleged.

Phagwara, October 27
Ban on the use of fire crackers during Divali celebration from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. will be announced on a public address system in the city, particularly in villages soon, said the Phagwara SDM Mr Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal.

The order says: “During the Divali period, the noise pollution caused by bursting of fire crackers is likely to create annoyance and injury to the health of people. There is an urgent need to prevent the annoyance and injury by restricting the usage of crackers.”

It has also been specified that the fire crackers were prohibited in the silence zones which includes the area of 100-metre around hospitals, educational institutions, courts and religious places.

Meanwhile, there has been a mixed reaction to the orders. A section of the public appreciate the orders, adding emphatically that the local administration should ensure the compliance of this after 10 p.m.

But Sumit Sharma, a student of Class XI, said, “The administration should not stop the public from enjoying an occasion like Divali. Relatives and friends get together from far-off places in a large number just for the festival. Lighting crackers in the company of others was just a way of expressing solidarity. There is no justification in laying conditions on the celebrations.”

Abhishek Chopra, a student of electronic engineering, said, “Loud noise and dirty air is no way of expressing joy.
