Naren pips Aroor for Power M1 title
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 23
A flat tyre 5 km from the finish of the last special stage spelt doom for Team MRF’s Arjun Rao Aroor, who lost 41 seconds and with it the overall title, which was clinched by VR Naren Kumar of Team JK in the HPCL Power M1 Challenge, the fourth round of the MAI’s Indian National Rally Championship, which concluded at Kalagram on Sunday.

Naren, suffering from a viral infection, was a relieved man after the end of the race. The champion driver had to draw deep into his reserves and rely on his considerable experience to emerge the winner.

Trailing Aroor and co-driver Chandramouli overnight by 10 seconds, Naren Kumar and co-driver Ram Kumar made six seconds on the first special stage of the day, over 10.14 km run at Kanda in the Shivalik Hills. Aroor was also docked a penalty of 90 minutes for reporting to service nine minutes late after the last stage. This meant team-mate Arjun Balu/ Kumar Ramaswamy leapfrogged into the second position, ahead of Aroor. Naren completed the rally in 2 hours 7 minutes and 20 seconds, while Balu came home in 2:9.13 and Aroor in 2:9.22.

Earlier, Team MRF’s Karandip Singh and Jaidas Menon were excluded from the competition for a technical violation, and were not permitted to start on the second day.

Both Arjun Balu and Arjun Rao Aroor maintained their momentum in the super special stage, the concluding stage of the rally in Kalagram, finishing first and second, with timings of 2.18 and 2.19 minutes, respectively. Naren could only manage 2.23 minutes.

The 1400 cc saw Prithveen Rajan and PVS Murthy winning the title with a timing of 2:13.09, followed by Philipose Mathai and Ashwyn Naik in second place.

Local driver Sunny Siddhu drove away with the honours in the Gypsy Class with a timing of 2:12.16, which also placed him in fifth place overall, a creditable showing that earned him much applause from the home crowd at the podium finish.

The Rally Star Cup also saw the emergence of new talent in Chetan Shivram and Rupesh Kholay, who finished on top in their category with a timing of 2:13.11.

Final results: Overall: Naren Kumar/Ram Kumar (Team JK, Baleno) 2:7.20; Arjun Balu/Kumar Ramaswamy (Team MRF, Baleno) 2:9.13; Arjun Rao Aroor/Chandramouli 2:9.22; Vikram Mathais/Sujith Kumar (Team MRF, Baleno) 2:10.16; Sunny Siddhu/HS Bawa (Gypsy) 2:12.16; Prithveen Rajan/PVS Murthy (Esteem) 2:13.09.

Kolkata, October 23
Having confirmed his return to form with a hundred in a Duleep Trophy tie, Sourav Ganguly today preferred to keep silent on his performance while hailing the efforts of his East Zone teammates against North Zone. “I don’t want to talk about my own performance. I am part of a winning team and I feel happy that my century came handy for the team to win the match,” Ganguly said on his return to the city after playing the Duleep Trophy match in Rajkot.

Ganguly cracked 117 runs in East Zone’s first innings and captured four wickets for 56 in the match.

Hailing the efforts of his East Zone team-mates, particularly seamer Shiv Sankar Paul and wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta, the left-hander said, “I am sure the boys are looking forward to playing the final. This team is capable of winning the trophy.”

He also preferred to remain silent on the possibility of his return to the Indian squad, or his fitness issue. “I have not said anything about this in Rajkot. I am not going to comment on it here too.” Asked if this innings under pressure was one of his best in domestic cricket, Ganguly said, “I can only say any achievement is satisfying.” — PTI

BSF annex football title
Ravi Dhaliwal

Nabha, October 23
BSF, Jalandhar, rode on a combination of luck and pluck to annex the title in the 30th All-India Gurdarshan memorial football tournament which concluded at the Ripudaman College ground here this evening.

In an absorbing final, the Jalandhar security men downed PSEB 2-1 to win the trophy for the fifth time.

BSF had won the Governor’s Cup in Sikkim early this month. “Two titles in less than a month augur well for the team’s prospects in forthcoming tournaments,” said BSF coach Avtar Singh after the match.

BSF opened the scoring through medio J. Ouseph, who made his way speedily in from the right flank and chipped the ball home over two defenders and goalkeeper Bhupinder Singh.

BSF could have increased the lead but striker Amarjit Rai’s power-packed shot hit the woodwork and the ball was cleared out of harm’s way by Rajkumar Gill, who sprinted in from the top of the box to near the goal line to help PSEB ward off what appeared to be a certain goal.

Led admirably upfront by veteran Gurjit Atwal and Amarjit Rai and supported neatly in the midfield by Sarabjit Singh, the Jalandhar security men held the upper hand for almost the entire first half. Their defenders did a fine job, the midfielders gave good passes to the frontline, while the strikers made their presence by taking shots at the goal. Gurjit Atwal scored the team’s second goal after he was set up by Deepak Kumar. The Punjab power men made a mess of at least four clear chances in the first half.

Much against the run of play, with BSF completely dominating the proceedings, PSEB managed to reduce the margin through half-back Parminder Singh, whose banana kick found the net.

The second half saw BSF completely bottling up PSEB danger man Gurpreet Singh, a tactical move initiated by the BSF coach which aimed at throwing the frontline out of gear. Towards the end of the contest, BSF were reduced to 10 men when Deepak Kumar was shown the red card for rough play. The Jalandhar team was more content to retain the one-goal advantage, although PSEB did come close to scoring in the last minute.
