THE venue was Mountview Hotel’s Banquet Hall. The occasion was unveiling of the exclusive autumn-winter ’05 collection of executive range of clothing under the brand name ‘Black Tag’ by Kapsons. The whole exercise was packaged as a Boss’s Day and men at the helm of affairs, bossy CEO variety, and others. So the men suited in black were all around but they were visible only when women in shimmering clothes offset them.

This held true of the fashion show held on the occasion. The men’s wear had to ride piggyback on feminine attire and female models that made all the difference to the show. So popular and new songs from Bollywood films were chosen like Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayal aata hai… and sham rang bhumoro…to have male and female models doing some romantic charades on the ramp. Mind you, anchoring the show was the ‘mistress’ and not the ‘master’ of ceremonies. Nishi Kapoor, wife of Darpan Kapoor, wearing a sequined red sari and choli, held the show beautifully together from the beginning to the final surprise.

The big surprise was well-known city bosses actually going up the ramp to model the executive clothing and Arrow shirts. Former advocate-general Mac Sarin was the cutest and most sporting of the lot, actually doing a smart turnaround and taking of his coat with a flourish. Others in this charming end-of-the day presentation included Dr. Mangat Dogra, Darpan Kapoor, Anil Talwar and Dr.Vini Sachdeva. Nishi said, “We got a choreographer all the way from Delhi for this special bit. And these eminent people were gracious enough to come and do a little rehearsal in the afternoon.” Mac Sarin joked, “Well, if law hadn’t got the better of me, I would have been cat-walking.”

There were many cool cats around and the event had been put together by yet another woman, Bittu Sandhu of Strides event management. “The entire event was designed to make the bosses feel good but most of them were conceding that the real bosses were their better halves.” Well, a few cocktails down the throat and the truth is bound to come out. Most of the big bosses were asked to speak out a line each and happily there was a female boss too. Orthopaedic surgeon Sanjay Salooja had another dig to make in favour of women: “Women are far more lucky, they don’t have wives!”

YOU might have been to the Far East on a holiday, to China or Hong Kong, tasted the amazing variety of foods on offer and wondered how they do it. In addition, staying in the City Beautiful only you must have experienced scrumptious Chinese dishes in well-known restaurants like Mandarin, Shangri-La, Chop Sticks et al. interestingly, the Chinese restaurant market is notoriously competitive. And for that matter now there is yet another Chinese food joint for all those Chinese cuisine lovers.

After its success in cities as that of Pune, Delhi and Gurgaon, ‘Yo China’ a Chinese restaurant has recently opened its 12th outlet but first in the city, which has come as a good experience for the customers to pamper their taste buds. Though not designed as a typical Chinese facade it still gives a very lively and an enjoyable feel. Or if put in one sentence, the place is in no way disappointing in its food preparation as it blends with the name ‘China’ magnificently.

According to its Area Manager Sanjiv Raj, “Yo China is an American concept. Its logo ‘Chinese Food, Chinese Prices’ very well correlates with the theme. This restaurant has been designed keeping in mind the time factor as it believes in quick food service within 10 minutes of placing the order.”

The most important thing that counts in this restaurant is its ambience as compared to other typical Chinese cuisine outlets. The concept of dim lights, dragon hangings or paintings and Chinese writings has been taken over by bright lights and beautiful paintings on red and yellow coloured walls.

“Awarded as the “Best Chinese Restaurants” by a famous Food Guide Journal, the concept of Yo China has come up as we have either the hawkers or really expensive Chinese cuisines in the market. So our idea is to offer Chinese street hawker pricing with quality Chinese food,” he said.

Talking about its menu, the main attraction for people here is an assortment of combos that is offered in one platter, which ranges from mini meals to main course meals that too at affordable price prepared in the state-of-the-art kitchen headed by corporate chef from China. Along with this, another lip-smacking dish in its ‘carte du jour’ is the variety of ‘Dim Sums’ or ‘Momos’, which are challaneng ing burgers and pizzas in the fast food genre.

“We want to provide our customers with quality cuisine at affordable price. Even the non-veg combo (served with steamed rice, spring roll, and one main dish ) comes in less than Rs 100,” he asserted.

Shalini Kapoor is enjoying her stint on television, says Dharam Pal

Shalini KapoorSHE’S been a regular face on the television and Gujarati film goers would remember actress Shalini Kapoor from the different hit films she’s been a part of in this language. Currently the Kolkata -born actress is enjoying her stint on television. If she’s seen as Sakshi in Kkusum, she’s also seen as the ‘other woman’ Mohini in Zee tv’s newly launched afternoon daily Paalkhi. About Mohini , she says, “It’s a very positive role, even if it’s the other woman. Right now, it’s a very positive character. Gradually, it will turn grey. It’s quite an interesting role compared with the characters I normally get to play. I’m often offered the positive, chirpy, innocent, bubbly kind of roles, though what I am looking for is a good negative role. A negative character offers a lot of scope for performance and on tv, you see a lot of these characters. I’d love to play one someday.”

Shalini is glad that her character in Paalkhi is being appreciated. “For an actor there is nothing more than appreciation. I’m happy that the show is being watched and most importantly, my character is being noticed.”

Shalini says that though she has dabbled in both films and television, she wouldn’t trade one for the other. “Today television is so big that as an actor you are very satisfied.”After being crowned Miss Kolkata in 1996, a dream to make it in the Hindi film industry brought Shalini to the city of opportunities. “I came to Bombay to try my luck. Fortunately, my family stood by me and goaded me on to try my hand at acting. I got offers in Gujarati films and since I have the knack of picking up any language, I learnt Gujarati. I have acted in 12 Gujarati films and some of them have been hits.

Right now, I am acting in a bilingual, Hindi- Bhojpuri film produced by Gopi Mallya.

Riding high on the success of the popular programmes ‘Dial One Aur Jeeto’ and ‘Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki’ (of which they are Executive Producers) on Sahara One, Percept Picture Company is ready with their latest offering ‘Hare Kkaanch Ki Choodiyan’.’ Hare Kkaanch Ki Choodiyan ‘ tells the story of a simple middle-class girl Shyamlee and her gradual transformation into a woman of strength... A drama cum thriller with a difference, the show is full of unexpected twists and turns...

EVER wonder what birds see when they fly. Here is a chance to find out.

On display is an exhibition of aerial photography at the Alliance Francaise art gallery, which have been clicked by fixing the camera on a kite.

The photographs have been clicked by Nicolas Chorier and the exhibition is titled ‘Kite and Klik’. The exhibition is on display till October 25.

Nicholas Chorier is a professional photographer and his preferred technique is Kite Aerial photography.

He has shot at many places abroad and in India, he has shot in Jodhpur, Ahmedabad and Agra.

According to Nicholas, the kite is simple, cost-effective and environment-friendly and is used as a "hook" in the sky.

The camera is mounted on a small "cradle" and is attached to the string, approximately 30 meters below the kite. Radio-remoted, this camera can be aimed at all directions while a transmitter sends back the image to the ground.

The steadiness of the kite provides much better results than other flying objects. As the kite needs no energy other than the wind, it can remain on a site for a whole day with accuracy and finesse.

Kite Aerial photo kit is the simplest way to carry an aerial platform anywhere in the world, with no hassle due to administration procedures.

Chorier expresses his passion as "I love the idea that the molecule of air, which hits my kite when flying in Ahmedabad, was probably in Senegal one week earlier, and will fly in Mongolia one week later…One Sky One World! "

Gifts to set the feet a dancing

THE times we are living in are really merry dancing times. No occasion is quite complete without shaking the legs and swinging the arms. In India, we have many festivals and we have just finished with the Navratra revelry. The multicultural identity depicted to television has set even the Bhangra and Gidha-loyal loyal Punjabis doing Dandiya Ras. A dance is dance call it by any name. Or assign any style to it. Freestyle happens to be the most popular at wedding and birthday bashes. Of course, Western dance has many takers. There are any number of schools and clubs coaching the salsa and the tango. So with gifts depicting dance poses, one can never be quite wrong. Even if the gifts like the ones here have to them the old-world charm of the classical ballet or stylized ballroom vintage 19th Century. These art objects are sure to find a place in some corner of the living room.

YOUTH NET
Talking of Global Kids

WHILE strolling down the cyber-street, one comes across countless websites that deal with myriad subjects and cater to all sorts of tastes and age groups. One finds youth groups very interesting for their sheer earnestness and novelty of ideas.

Suddenly, one comes across newzcrew.org, the website run by youth for youth with the avowed purpose of developing and promoting “media literacy and youth engagement in the democratic process” by using internet and news media. The project is run by Global Kids – a New York City based educational organisation and the student section of Online News Hour, aka, News Hour Extra. One thought that democracy was an obsession with M/s Bush & Blair Inc, out to civilize or bomb out of existence those “undemocratic barbarians” in Iraq and elsewhere.

Since we are talking of youth groups, it is pertinent to ask, “What sort of youth groups succeed in their stated objectives?” There’s a long extract from the doctoral dissertation of Astroth, Kirk A (http://www.montana.edu/www4h/vibrant.html). He states that vibrant youth groups are effective because they are more concerned with weaning, not winning. Vibrant youth groups change how they do things but not what they do. They work hard and play hard. These groups empower rather than embalm young people because they communicate as well as listen. Vibrant youth groups are able to achieve a certain harmony between too much chaos and too much rigidity— ordered chaos, or as the new buzzword puts it—‘chaordic’. When circumstances change, vibrant youth groups are able to adapt by making the necessary changes in rules, power structures or relations to move on. Ineffective groups are devastated by change and are so rigid as to be unable to fit in to new circumstances. It’s a long but worth reading article on the website.

For the spiritually inclined there’s youthministry.com, a web portal for youth leaders. It trains youth for developing leadership traits even as it grounds them in the basics of Church activities.

Om PuriTHAT envious flick of the eyebrow, a captivating smile, smoldering eyes or a body to die for-well, he does not have all that for sure. But to say that he can’t drive fans berserk, would far from reality. For, he has that quintessential ‘talent’ that makes him stand heads and shoulders above the rest of the stars in Bollywood. He’s the same young North Indian boy, who was born at a rural area and grew up planning to be a Military man. It just happened, however, that while studying at Punjabi University, he joined a Theatre Group-the spark that triggered off the ‘fire to perform’ in him. Three years at the National School of Drama, New Delhi and a stint at the Indian Film Institute in Poona, brought out of him a talent which awestruck both East and West alike.

Despite lacking the classically handsome features, Puri is today India’s most respected and prolific screen personality. Having appeared in over 140 films, he’s also been the delight of Western filmmakers (his landmark roles being ‘Gandhi’ ,Wolf, ‘City of Joy’, ‘My Son the Fanatic’ and ‘East is East’).Whether it was a period film, Political drama, Family drama, Urban Drama, Satire or Comedy, this actor has performed it, displaying great range and versatility. No wonder, he’s described as the finest actor of the post-Independence generation.
