TAKE a break from the regular and live up the festive season with the rich vibrancy of fusion bags, clothes and jewellery! Funky blends of the East and West are in and how! Fusion can be seen in every aspect of fashion and our Indian designers are bringing out the best “inspirations” possible!

At an exhibition at the Copper Club in Sector 26, Sonika Khanna and Monica Gupta bring their charming collections to celebrate that delicious nip in the air—the change of season—the delightful onset of winters.

Faux leather bags with distinct western shapes—clutch, clasp, old fashioned, stone encrusted handles—mingled with Indian embroidery, Mughal miniature paintings (printed on), laden with Kundan and Jadau, all make for an eclectic showing. Innovative use of stones, brocade etchings and fashionable silhouettes, these bags will definitely make a style statement this season! Priced between Rs. 1400 to 3000, they have the added advantage of suiting a variety of tastes, with antique oxidized frames and trimmings.

Pure georgettes, crepes and cotton-silks in bright colours, vivid yellows, flaming reds, elegant blacks—a veritable kaleidoscope—with intricate and fine embroidery work are distinct, having come from Mumbai!

Graceful Parsi embroidery enhanced with stone-work, pink brocade edgings on a white sari, avlas (coins) netted at the base of the sari, adding lustre and splendour to the work, all make for an elegant collection.

With hand and machine embroidered kurtis going for Rs. 1900 to 2800, gorgeous saris in the range of Rs. 10,000 to 14,000 and Salwar Kameezes for Rs. 4000 to 9000, the collection is certainly a dekko!

Lucknavi suits, kundan stitched on tissue brocade, zardozi style work, rose-pinks, burnished oranges; the range is indeed delightful.

If clothes and bags are on offer, can jewellery be far behind? So what are on special offer are the fusion sparklers—Bollywood style! Chandelier earrings, clunky rinks even traditional bridal polki sets—all in real diamonds and precious and semi-precious stones. From Rs. 6000 for pendants to Rs. 2 lakh for the heavier stuff, the offerings are unique and stylized. With a buy-back guarantee, there is reason to riffle through these unusual pieces.

Day of the Boss

IT is a formal card, all in black, with a rather curious invitation that says: ‘…with sincere gratitude and utmost pleasure, we cordially invite you to an evening, which is put together to honour all CEOs, Bosses and people who matter most to the society.”

Well, others may have forgotten but not Kapsons. On the occasion of launching their ‘BLACK TAG’ autumn-winter ’05 executive range of clothing, they have decided to celebrate the Boss Day on October 16 with a gala evening of cocktails and dinner at Hotel Mountview. Some 150 top bosses of the city have been invited for the do with their names specially printed on the cards. So the evening tomorrow will make it clear that who really is the boss!

Like all days in fashionable days, the Boss’s Day is also invented by the US card industry. It is being celebrated since 1979 on October 16. A quotationsworth quoting on this day printed on the little card below clearly says that it is time to suck up to the boss. Anyway, the boss is always right. — ND

Stars shine on luscious lips
Saurabh Malik

SHE reaches for the stars with feet firmly on the ground and splashes them on her red luscious lips. As she admires her heavenly image in the mirror, Waida's appreciating eyes twinkle with mischief. Flashing a divine smile, she curls her lips to blow a kiss before leaving the house to show the world her new sparkling lipstick.

Waida has reasons to feel on the top of the world. Like so many of her chums, this Miss has just kissed goodbye to conventional crimson and rust shades. She has picked up sparkling pearl crystals in plum and wine for adding a stunning and glistering shine to her pouters.

"I plan to wear the shades daily to college to dazzle onlookers," she beams. Tilting her head cutely towards the right before smoothening her highlighted tresses with her hands, she grins, "You see, ‘shine sparkle lipsticks' make my pouters look sensational and add tones of glitz and glamour to my lips".

Lip service

Brighten up your smile by following lip-tips complied just for you:

For that sun-kissed look in the winters, define your lips with a natural Beige.

Go to that funky dance party after giving colour to your lips from a rich Maroon shade. The effect is striking, of course.

You can outline your luscious lips Chocolate Bronze and fill in lip gloss. Sensuous is how you will look.

Remember, lipstick with light, shining or frosted shades make lips look larger. Dark or matt shades do the opposite.

Lip liners give definition to the lips and help in correcting flaws in the shape.

Before applying, twist out the lip colour only by a centimetre to avoid damage or breakage.

Allow lip colour 60 seconds to set.

Now smile your way to glamour.

Pulling them out of her plush leather handbag, she says, "Glistering crystals are the stuff dreams, of so many damsels, are made of these days. They provide a short cut to glamour and last from morning to evening. Loaded with sparkle, they add glamour to everyday wear and look chic in parties".

They come in different hues and flavours - right from clover pink, peach supreme, magnificent mauve, ice spice, delicious strawberry, sparkling rose, yummy plum, deep honey to sharp cinnamon.

For her and so many others, jewellery shops and drugstores all over the city are offering these ‘burning stars of desire’. Push open the glass door and you will see twinklers beam under synthetic daylight.

Introduced to the ladies' purse a few months back, they are shining like never before. The price is somewhat on the higher side. “But then the product is definitely superior," says Zubina, a city-based make-up artist.

"Along with the shine, the super gel matrix system moisturises the lips all day long, while it sits feather light on the lips - offering beauty and comfort in one go. Added lipesomes and vitamins also nourish and condition the lips," she adds.

So gals, kiss the latest. And, let stars shine on those luscious lips!

PAMMY’S BEAUTY TIPS
Flawless Finish

ALL great faces start with the ‘perfect canvas’. Only good skills of applying foundation can help you in achieving that perfect, flawless finish, enhancing your complexion and giving you a radiant glow. A well selected foundation should go on smoothly and evenly without adding shine or gloss. Choose your foundation carefully, as wrong base would make your base pigments look uneven, failing to cover your imperfections. The best way to choose the foundation is to test it on the jaw-line and on the lowest part of your cheek, never on the back of your hand. The true match will be absorbed into your skin so well that you almost can’t see that it’s there. Always test the colour in natural daylight.

When testing on your skin, always apply a couple of shades in a downward stripe and leave it a few seconds before you blend. Always look for bases with yellow pigments, rather than pink ones as they are more natural looking. They are often formulated with UV protectants and moisturisers protecting from air-pollution and harmful UV rays. To get the best protection for your skin check the level of sunscreen that is provided in them.

Application Tips

  • Never apply foundation with dirty hands or on unclean skin. You will spread grime and germs.
  • Always cleanse, tone and moisturise your skin before foundation application.
  • The rule is what is dark make it light. Avoid covering laughter lines as you can never get even coverage.
  • Use a wedge shaped sponge as its corners cover hard to reach areas around the nose and the corners of eyes.
  • Never drag the sponge across as you’ll land up with a streaking effect .Wet the sponge, dip it in a dot of foundation, press it against your face, rolling it gently over the area.
  • Always apply foundation to eye lids.
  • Use translucent powder to give that matt look, remember too much would settle into your wrinkles and highlight them.
  • Always end with patting your face with a tissue to take the excess off.
  • Remember your face does not stop at your jaw line, include your neck too!

For mature skin, less is more! Always apply foundation sparingly and without trying to fill those laughter lines in the hope to camouflage. You will only draw attention by giving that caked, plastered effect. Usually a liquid or cream is preferred for this skin type. Look for foundations with vitamin A and E as they treat the skin while playing their role as a foundation. Always apply a suitable moisturiser before giving it a base to glide on. Remember it is not an anti- ageing product, so don’t hope to get a face lift!

For normal skin there is a wide variety, depends what you want to achieve, a matt or dewy finish with high or light coverage. For oily and combination skins, an oil free, water based foundation is recommended as it does not clog the pores. It will feel very comfortable and last longer and give a fine finish.

The types of foundations available are many to choose from. Liquid offers light, medium or high coverage and can be formulated for any skin type. The cream- foundations have a emollient base, they offer a medium to high coverage. Powder- cream ones are available in oil-free formulations making them suitable for all skin types. They are best for quick and easy application. Mousse foundations are quick and easy to apply offering medium coverage. Cake foundations are the oldest on the shelves, applied with a damp sponge, giving lighter to greater coverage, most suitable for oily skins but can be applied on all. Tint foundations come with a sunscreen and are best suited for outdoors.

Giving a shape to her fancies is what a lady of culture and refinement, Neeru Kaushal, did. And today, she queens over the largest and most sought-after furniture mall that Chandigarh can boast of —Trendz. The unique selling point of the carved and ornamental furniture designed by Neeru is that it’s specially made to order and meets the special requirements of each client.

How did all this come about? This former St. Bede’s graduate says, “I always wanted to do something different and not just a routine nine to five job. For a while, I was busy with home and my children. But we were always traveling.” During her travels throughout Europe, she visited palaces and museums and was struck by the beautiful furniture she saw. First, she got some of the pieces replicated here for her own home and then she decided to go into furniture business. The response was so good that her husband, who was running a very successful business of engineering components, closed his shop and joined dear wife.

It is a pleasure indeed to visit their sprawling mall in the first phase of Industrial area. A vast variety of furniture is there from ornate to the very modern. “Our specialty is that we offer the complete furniture for each room with all the accessories. We also cater to all budgets. The customer has just to tell us her/his budget and we try to fit in the best well within that.” Not only does Neeru have many clients all over the country, she is also exporting her handcrafted furniture to the USA, England and Australia. They have an ever-growing number of NRI customers. “We don’t repeat designs and take care of the comfort of the people who are going to use the furniture,” says this enterprising lady.

The dominant colours in the garments were muted reds, shimmering silvers and glistening gold. Black as the favourite colour was present but in combination with silver, gold and red. Long chains and beads were draping not just the necks but the shoulders, backs, arms and even the torsos.Sequins on the garments and glitters on the body gave a festive look. Ladies came back with many fresh ideas for the fall. So the autumn party scene in the city will be something to look forward to.

The charming actress who stepped into Bollywood with Harry Baweja’s ‘Yeh Kya Ho Rahaa Hai’, was also seen in Raj Kaushal’s ‘Shaadi Ka Ladoo’ wherein she was paired opposite Aashish Chowdhry and in ‘Ramji Londonwale’ opposite R Madhvan.

The actress was even gung ho about working with South’s superstar Madhavan, who guided her throughout the film ‘Ramji Londonwale’. “ He would be there observing the monitor even when he wasn’t in the scenes. There was so much to learn from him, since he’s done quite a few films with Mani Ratnam , the God of the southern film industry.” She smiles. She adds that this film was a huge leap for her from ‘Yeh Kya Ho Raha’ and ‘Shaadi Ka Ladoo’ which were sweet films but didn’t rally satisfy her as an actor. “ Whereas in ‘‘Ramji Londonwale’’, there was ample scope for performance and I definitely think it did wonders for my career’’.
