‘Debt-ridden’ farmer commits suicide
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, October 6
A farmer, hailing from Selbarah village, today committed suicide by jumping into a well, reportedly due to the burden of debt.

The deceased has been identified as Sukhdev Singh. Sources said he had mortgaged his land for getting a tractor on loan for one of his close associates in the village. But later, he received auction orders of his land, as his acquaintance failed to repay the loan. The villagers said that he was shocked after getting the auction notice and remained mentally upset.

Representatives of the panchayat had initiated talks with his family to find a way out for repayment of loan, but it was yet to reach any conclusion. The deceased was also a leader of BKU Krantikari.
