Storm kills 87 in Central America

Tropical Storm Stan only briefly reached hurricane strength but left a trail of devastation across Mexico and Central America, where the death toll today rose to 87.

Authorities said floods and mudslides caused by the storm’s torrential rains killed 49 persons in El Salvador, 22 in Guatemala, 10 in Nicaragua and six in Mexico. The storm slammed ashore in Mexico’s state of Veracruz on Tuesday. — AFP
