Destiny failed him
Ludhiana, October 1
He was not destined to receive a reward for thwarting a robbery at a nationalised bank. Paramjit Singh, a constable with PCR (48), who along with head constable Makhan Singh had caught three persons while they were trying to break into a nationalised bank on Ferozepore Road a few months ago, died on Thursday night after he suffered a massive heart attack while on duty.

Arora takes charge as PSEB Chief Engineer

Mr D.B. Arora, who took over as the Chief Engineer of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB), Central zone, today, plans to focus on providing regular supply to urban and rural consumers for which the emphasis would be on deloading overloaded feeders.

Pheruman’s biography released

A book release function of the biography of Darshan Singh Pheruman written by Karamjit Singh Aujla was held at the Punjabi Bhavan here today where the audience turned sentimental remembering the circumstances under which Pheruman had to lay down his life for the cause of Punjab.

Students, staff and management of Green Grove Public School, Khanna paid rich tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary tomorrow. Ms Amarjeet Sehgal, chairperson, Mr Prahlad Singh, trustee, and Mr Pawandeep Sehgal executive member of the school managing committee, were also present.

Demanding reduction in the period of input tax credit (ITC), taxation lawyers said today the long duration was having an adverse impact on financial condition of traders.

Fashion choreographer and producer Rashmi Virmani feels that Punjabis are very good looking and full of vigour. There is a need to properly channelise their energies and modelling can prove to be a very lucrative profession for the youngsters here. Rashmi was in city today to announce the audition dates for budding models to be selected from Ludhiana, Amritsar and Chandigarh.

PCMSA demands pay parity
Ludhiana, October 1
The Punjab Civil Medical Services (PCMS) Association has demanded pay parity with Central services doctors in time-bound scales of specialist PCMS doctors at the beginning of the service, two years and six years of service comparable to the scales at four, nine and 14 years of service of general duty doctors and IAS/PCS officers, conveyance allowance and free telephone facility to all doctors on call emergency duty for 24 hours.

Health camp for senior citizens
Ludhiana, October 1
As many as 600 patients were examined on the first day of a two-day free senior citizen health check-up camp being organised by the DMCH at Dumra Auditorium. A team of 35 doctors conducted the camp. The programme was organised to mark World Senior Citizens Day.

McDowell’s golf meet begins
Ludhiana, October 1
The first stage of the 4th edition of McDowell’s Signature Club Golf Championship teed off at the Ranjitgarh Golf Club, Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur, near here, today. Eightytwo golfers of the region had sent their confirmation for the event while 65 turned up today.

Ludhiana girls win volleyball tourney
Mandi Gobindgarh, October 1
The CBSE cluster XVI (Pb) volleyball tournament came to a colourful end today at Gobindgarh Public School here. It was the culmination of three days of competition among 44 teams comprising boys and girls in the under-19 age group from all over Punjab.

BVM athletes win four medals
Ludhiana, October 1
Students of the local Bharatiya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School gave another sterling performance. Seven students in the U-11 category, represented Patiala Zone in the Inter-Zonal Athletics Meet organised by the Sarvhitkari Educational Society on September 27 at Khanori Mandi in Sangrur, district bagged four medals.
