SC order on quota: all-party meet tomorrow
New Delhi, August 21 “This direction is an injustice to the Dalits and people of economically backward class. We will oppose this direction and urge the government to bring a new legislation for its reversal,” said CPI secretary D Raja. Addressing a public meeting held on the issue here, he said the matter of admission policy and fee structure could not be left to the private colleges. CPM leader Nilotpal Basu said the Supreme Court’s direction stipulated 15 per cent reservation for NRIs, while denying reservation for the “actually deserving” students. “The Dalits and other backward classes should get reservation so that they can join the mainstream. But the Supreme Court direction denies reservation to them, while it gives reservation to NRIs,” he said. An all-party meeting is scheduled on August 23 at the residence of HRD Minister Arjun Singh to discuss the matter.
