Two thieves lynched in Khora
Our Correspondent

Noida, August 14
Fed up with the ineffectiveness of the police, people took the law into their own hands and thrashed two thieves to death in Khora Colony’s Rajiv Nagar last night.

Three miscreants had barged into the house of Arvind Kumar at 3 am. The thieves, who could not be identified, are aged between 18 to 22 years. Hearing some noise, Arvind raised the alarm and with the help of neighbours two thieves were overpowered, while one of their companion had succeeded in fleeing.

A crowd of 2, 000 people started thrashing the two thieves, eyewitnesses said. The badly injured thieves were rushed to the Ghaziabad government hospital from where they were referred to MGM Hospital. They succumbed to their wounds on the way to MGM Hospital.

The thieves were said to be involved in a number of thefts in Rajiv Nagar. People said about half a dozen thefts had taken place in the colony. Nobody has yet gone to the police station for filing a theft case.

In Noida’s Garhi Chokhandi also, a youth was beaten to death a few days ago. People alleged in spite of repeated phone calls to the police station the police did not turn up at Rajiv Nagar. After three hours one cop had reached the spot who in turn informed the police post and police station in charge about the lynching of the thief. In Khora, with a five-lakh population, there are only half a dozen cops for security and maintaining law and order in the colony.

Self-defence camps: Women get a shot in the arm
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 14
With incidents of violence and crime against women showing a steady increase, self-defence training is fast emerging as a new mantra to fight this menace.

“We have provided the fundamentals of self-defence, which can be of immense help to the girls and women in any eventuality. The intention is not to make them experts, but to equip them with certain skills to retaliate the attacks and protect themselves,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Crime Against Women Cell, K C Dwivedi, said.

The police organise regular camps, where the experts give training on varied methods of self-defence like Taekwondo, Karate to repel the attacker. It has so far organised 166 such camps during the last three years.

Delhi Police is the first force in the country to launch such a drive. And the initiative is getting good response too, Mr Dwivedi said.

“The number of participants is increasing,” he pointed out.

The physical trainers of various schools in the city are participating in the programme. They would impart the skills to the students in their schools.

Besides the police initiative, a few private agencies have come up with some products, which, they claim, to be beneficial for self-defence. The attackers can be immobilised by the use of pepper sprays, they claim.

People, including women, working in different shifts in private companies also find these products useful. “Very often I have to go to my office at night time. I keep the peppers spray for my personal security,” said Rahul Sahgal working with a company in Gurgaon.

Mr R A Ghai, the general manager of Unisafe Technologies, the manufacturer of a particular brand of pepper spray, said that these products were getting encouraging results.

“The women and girls are becoming cautious. So the sale of such products has increased. Now the market size for such self-defence products in Delhi is about Rs 10,000 per month,” he remarked.

Washermen seek a fair deal
Nalini Ranjan

New Delhi, August 14
About 14,000 washermen associated with the 17 dhobi ghats in the Gole Market area of the Lutyens’ Delhi have submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, Mrs Sheila Dikshit, on the ‘indifference’ by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) towards their plight. They have sought her intervention in this matter.

In the letter addressed to the Chief Minister, they said that due to the apathy of the NDMC, they are being compelled to wind up their work.

According to a senior member of the Delhi Pradesh Dhobi Samaj, Mr Sanjay Kanaujia, the NDMC has decided to place water supplied to various dhobi ghats in the bracket of commercial tariff. Despite much opposition, the decision has been in effect since June 24. “Thus, we have no other option than to pay three to four times more than what we had been paying. We cannot put this burden on our customers. If we do, they would prefer to go to nearby dry cleaners rather than taking our services,” he said.

Mr Kanaujia alleged that the NDMC was adopting double standards vis-à-vis our community. “They got built flats near Hailey Road and Moti Bagh Dhobi Ghats and allotted them to the washermen of those areas sometime back. Even in the Kalibari Dhobi Ghat area, the land has already been sanctioned for the construction of such flats for the washermen. Why are we being deprived of that basic facility. We are suffering due to the differences between the Chief Minister and the Vice-Chairman of the NDMC, Ms Tajdar Babar, as the Gole Market area is the constituency of the Chief Minister. We are even being victimised due to that reason,” he asserted.

Mr Kanaujia demanded that on the lines of Valmiki Samaj, a separate commission should be constituted for the welfare of our community. There are more than 100 Dhobi Ghats across the Capital in which 17 fall into the NDMC area. Out of them, Sunhari Bag, South Avenue and Darbhanga Dhobi Ghats have been functioning since pre-Independence days.

It could not have been a more appropriate tribute to the legendary Hindi writer who excelled in picking out social issues and spinning them into immensely readable short stories to reach the message to the masses. The English translation of Munshi Premchand’s famous novel, Sevasadan, was launched here last week as fans of the legendary Hindi writer celebrated his 125 th birth anniversary.

The fans also bought his other English translations like The World of Premchand and Widows, Wives, and other Heroines (collection of short stories) and two of his novels, Nirmala and Gaban.

The 125th birth anniversary of Premchand, who was born on July 31, 1880, is being celebrated this year with a string of events, including book launches, seminars, exhibitions and discussions.

With social themes and character studies, he set a standard for writers to follow, says the cover of Sevasadan, published by Oxford University Press (OUP), India.
