Give jobs to kin of killed boys: PDP

Srinagar, July 28
Ruling People’s Democratic Party today said the Centre should provide jobs to the next of kin of the three boys killed by Army troops in north Kashmir’s Kupwara, besides punishing the erring personnel.

“Besides giving punishment to the erring Army personnel, the Centre should also provide jobs to the next of kin of the deceased. The state government will also do its bit,” PDP President Mehbooba Mufti said while addressing a gathering here on the party’s sixth foundation day.

“Workers of a private company were lathicharged in Gurgaon, which is condemnable, and it hogged the limelight in Parliament, but three kids were killed by Army troops in Kupwara but nobody mentioned it,” she said.

“Everybody talks about Kashmir being ‘atoot ang’ (integral part) of India. What kind of integral part is this where you don’t feel its pain?” she said.

Seeking Pakistan’s “help in ending the bloodshed in Jammu and Kashmir,” Ms Mehbooba said, “President Pervez Musharraf should persuade militants, who have taken refuge on the other side of the Line of Control, for a ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir so that peace process and dialogue could move forward.”

When people died in blasts in London, President Musharraf ordered a crackdown in Pakistan. “I want to ask him where is his cane when innocent people are killed in Kashmir,” she said.

She said the Centre should reduce troops in the state as announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last year and replace them by police force formed by recruiting local youth. — PTI

Mufti snubs BJP for opposing Centre-Hurriyat dialogue
Tribune News Service

Jammu, July 28
Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed today snubbed the BJP for opposing any dialogue by the Centre with the Hurriyat Conference in a bid to find a solution to the Kashmir problem.

The Mufti, who was addressing a public meeting of his PDP workers here, said the Hurriyat leaders were invited to Delhi by the previous BJP-led NDA government for talks with the then Deputy Prime Minister, Mr L.K. Advani, but now the party was trying to create a fear psychosis out of the proposed talks.

He said the Centre has not yet started a dialogue with the Hurriyat, but the BJP has started raising its voice against such move by the Congress-led Union Government.

He said the process of reconciliation was irreversible and the process of dialogue has to be carried forward.

The Mufti said the representative character of his government couldn’t be challenged as the legislators were duly elected. He said the aspirations of people for peace cannot be overlooked and keeping in mind the ground reality Pakistan has also extended a hand of friendship with India.

The Mufti virtually presented the report card of his government and counted its achievements on the occasion.

He made it clear that execution of the 450 mws Baghliar hydroelectric project would not be stopped despite protests by Pakistan. The project was the flagship of the state and we have committed no violation of the Indus Water Treaty in its construction.

The Chief Minister said J&K was the worst sufferer of the Indus Treaty that was signed by India and Pakistan without keeping in mind the interest of the state. He urged the Centre to take steps to review the treaty that has put restrictions on the state’s storage capacity of river waters and construction of hydroelectric and irrigation projects.

He said it was not possible to harness the nearly 16,000 ,mws generation capacity available in the state with the Indus Water Treaty in existence. His government’s endeavour was to provide equal status to all three regions of the state and remain responsive to the regional aspirations, he added.

Forum against thrusting solution on J and K people

Jammu, July 28
A 13-member team representing the Forum for Regional Voices from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, which reached Jammu on Wednesday night, has called for the withdrawal of troops on both sides of the border in Jammu and Kashmir and opposed imposing a of a solution on the people of the state.

Mr Abdul Majid Malik President of the Forum, and a former Chief Justice of POK High Court, told mediamen here on today “let people of Jammu and Kashmir decide their future. No solution should be thrust on them.” He said “peoples’ aspirations, urges and desires should not be massacred by thrusting a Kashmir solution on them.”

Mr Mailk, while supporting the ongoing peace process said “the process is likely to succeed this time because it has the support of people in India and Pakistan.”

He said “we want walls of hatred between the two sides to be demolished. We want walls of the two armies on either side of the LOC to be removed. Let the troops on both sides of the border be withdrawn to barracks.”

Malik said “people in India and Pakistan have realised that wars and hatred have yielded nothing but tension and hence they have supported the peace process. We have come to Jammu and Kashmir to interact with people so that we are able to further promote love among the people on both sides of the LOC.”

He made it clear that the All-Party Hurriyat Conference does not “represent people of all the three regions of Jammu and Kashmir.” “The Hurriyat leaders’ role was limited to the Kashmir valley and they have to demonstrate that they represent people of all three regions, including Pandits (Hindus) Sikhs and Buddhists,”he added.

The Forum leaders wanted more routes to be opened for easy interaction of people living on either side of the border.Mailk said “more families in the Jammu region have got divided during the partition than in Kashmir and hence four routes including Suchetgarh-Sialkot,Rajouri-Kotli,Poonch-Rawalakot and Kargil-Skardu be thrown open for traffic.”

Mailk was supported by another Forum member, Mr Khalid Akbar, in the demand for end to the gun culture in Jammu and Kashmir. They said “peace and gun do not go together.”

Khalid said “the gun culture should end and let the walls of hatred between the two sides be demolished.” He said “the vested interest need to be discouraged. Let more border routes be opened so that interaction among the people, especially the divided families was encouraged and facilitated.”

The Forum members are on an eight-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir. Their visit has been sponsored by the Delhi Policy Group and the Centre for Dialogue and reconciliation. During their visit they will meet a cross section of people, including academics and political leaders.
