LITERACY PROGRAMME: The local Rotary Club launched teaching classes at Gian Jyoti Public School, Phase 2, as part of their literacy programme for adults on Wednesday. The 15-day teaching camp will cater to over 50 illiterate slum dwellers and classes will be held at the school for two hours every day. Inaugurating the camp, the Principal of the school, Mr J.S. Bedi, appreciated the effort of the club. He said the school would provide notebooks, books and stationery and refreshment to the persons attending the classes free of cost. Dr B.S. Chandhok, president, Rotary, SAS Nagar, also spoke.

DEMANDED: Members of the All-India Ex-Servicemen Organisation (Personnel Below Officers Rank) have demanded a community centre and a central school at Mohali. A resolution to this effect was passed at a meeting of the organisation members held under the presidentship of Mr Jaswant Singh Kumbra here. The members demanded that the land meant for ex-servicemen in Phase 10 should be earmarked and developed as a multipurpose centre for the welfare of ex-servicemen below officers rank and their families.

WORKSHOP: The District TB Control Society held a sensitisation workshop for members of the National Integrated Medical Association under Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP). Dr Rajinder Sarna, District TB Officer, gave a brief history of the programme. Dr Vijay Garg, State TB Officer, said private practitioners should participate in the programme. Among others who spoke were Dr Manju Behl, WHO Consultant for RNTCP, Dr K.N. Srivastava and Dr Vinay Bansal.

REMANDED: Following the expiry of his police remand, Vinod Sharma, a gang leader who was produced in the court of Mr Bashir-ud-din, Judicial Magistrate, here on Monday, was handed over on transit remand to the Kanina police in Mahendergarh district. Vinod Sharma, who was allegedly involved in a case of vehicle-jacking in which a Scorpio vehicle had been snatched at pistol point at Gudha village, near Kanina, 35 km from here, on the night of July 3, was now wanted by the Kanina police in the case.

CHILD DEAD: Sakhshi, a three-year-old girl, was electrocuted in her house at Kharkhauda town, 19 km from here, on Tuesday. According to a report, she touched a cooler which had electric current.

DEMONSTRATION: A large number of workers, affiliated to the Van Vibhag Mazdoor Union, Haryana, held a procession here on Tuesday in support of their demands. Carrying placards and raising anti-government slogans, they marched through the main streets of the city and reached the mini-secretariat where they held a demonstration in front of DC’s office.
