Tug-of-war for state Cong chief’s post hots up
Ravi S. Singh
Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, June 26
With the organisational elections of the Haryana unit of the Congress already due, race for the post of its next president has gained momentum.
Though the general practice is that a Chief Minister of a Congress-ruled state has a major say in the choice of president of Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), many aspirants have thrown their hat in the ring.

The lobbying has become all the more intense on account of the strong probability of the incumbent president and former Chief Minister, Mr Bhajan Lal, being relieved on account of ill health.

According to the Congress insiders, it is almost certain that the choice as replacement will fall on a leader who is not from the traditional farming community.

The reason being that Chief Minister Bhuinder Singh Hooda has the background of farming community and that political balance has to be maintained in the choice of the new president.

Mr Bhajan Lal is said to be angling the post for his younger son from Bhiwani, Mr Kuldeep Bishnoi, however, his alleged open defiance of the party’s Central leadership along with his supporter-MLAs at the time of election of Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) is said to be working against him.

There are many, however, who feel that Mr Bhajan Lal’s espousal of the case for his son is an effort to buck up the latter’s case for induction in the Union Council of Ministers or a post in the party organisation at the Centre.

The name of one of the seniormost leader of the state and two time HPCC President, Sardar Harpal Singh, and Backward Class leader, Dr Ram Prakash, is also doing the rounds in party circles.

Sardar Harpal Singh is considered to be the tallest leader from the Punjabi community. His strong point is that he has the respect of a larger section of the Congress.

Dr Ram Prakash has an academic background and has been the think-tank of the party when Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda was its president.

Those in his favour say that making him the state party chief would also be taking on board the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) sections in the state.

The BCs and the OBCs would account for more than 40 per cent of the population in the state.

Also, the Congress MLA from Rai, Mr Ramesh Kaushik, is angling for the post. He is considered to be close to the general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and in-charge of Haryana Affairs, Mr Janardan Diwedi.

The case of Mr Kaushik appears to be getting weakend by the general feeling in the party that he is a late entrant to the organisation.

However, many in the party are not convinced at his name being bandied about for the post. Those who are of this line of thinking feel that he is propping up his case as a bargaining chip, to get inducted in the Council of Ministers in Haryana.

Mr Arvind Sharma, the Congress MP from Karnal, is also lobbying for the post. His supporters say that he has the backing of the former Union Minister, Capt Satish Sharma. However, like Mr Ramesh Kaushik, the factor weighing against him is his late entry to the organisation.

Police to approach The Sun on call centre leak
Ravi S. Singh
Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, June 26
The Gurgaon police has formally launched an inquiry into the call centre leak reported by a British tabloid, The Sun. However, so far the police appears to be groping in the dark in the absence of a formal complaint in the case.

The police version is that in the absence of a formal complaint, no first information report (FIR) has been registered.

According to it, there are only two sources having vital links with the case: one, Mr Karan Bahree, an employee of a business process outsourcing (BPO) firm, Infinity e-Search”, based here and who is alleged to have sold information collected from call centres. The second is the British tabloid, which did the sting operation. The police says it will also approach The Sun to give details.

A police team led by the DSP, Mr Kulwinder Singh, visited the residence of Mr Baharee at Dilshad Gardens in Delhi yesterday. The E/236B address (residence) where the police went in search of Mr Bahree, was locked. In case Mr Bahree is not tracebale, the police will approach The Sun, a senior member of the district police said.

The police today emphasised that someone would have to cooperate, and The Sun should give the details which it claims to have. It said at present its approach in the case was only pro-active, based on the newspaper reports. The confession by Mr Bahree made to his employer has been handed over to the police. However, the confession is made on a simple blank paper, the probative value of which can be ascertained only after the police records his (Mr Bahree’s) statement.

The police says when the Managing Director of Infinity e-Search, Mr Rahul Dutt, has already made it clear that his firm is not into call centre business, his authority in procuring the purported confession is doubtful.

It said both The Sun and the accused have not made any discloures whether the call centres from where the information had been leaked were based in Gurgaon. For that matter, it was not clear if the centres were in India. So far Gurgaon’s only link to the case is Mr Bahree, employed with the Infinity e-Search located here.

Meanwhile, a strict security cordon has been place around the Golf View buidling, housing Infinity e-Search, since the case was reported in newspapers.

While the police continues to whistle in the dark, the BPO industry mood on the whole is cynical on the authenticity of the development. An executive of Cybersys Infotech, Mr Rajeev Chibbar, whose firm has clienteele in the UK and the USA, said the information parted by The Sun does not reveal much.

Mr Tayal also offered to handle the banking jobs of the state government, which included treasury, collection of electric bill, sewerage, property charges etc., as was being done for the governments of Maharashtra and Rajasthan at present.

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 26
The Haryana Pradesh Chamar Sangharsh Samiti has demanded that the state government should immediately release the population figures of the 42 communities included in the Scheduled Castes as well as the jobs given to members of the “A” category of the Scheduled Castes.

In a statement issued here today the press secretary of the samiti, Mr Bahadur Singh, said a resolution to this effect was unanimously adopted at a meeting of the working committee of the samiti held under the chairmanship of its president, Mr Gaje Singh Muwal, in Kurukshetra today.

Seven tractors recovered, one held
Our Correspondent

Kurukshetra, June 26
Following the arrest of a person, the police claims to have solved the mystery shrouding the theft of seven new tractors worth Rs 40 lakh from the nearby Kserla village recently.

Stating this here today, the district police chief, Mr S.P. Ranga, said the arrested person had been identified as Balwinder Singh, a resident of Sirsala village in Kaithal district, and the police had succeeded in recovering seven stolen tractors and the tractor-trailer on which the tractors were loaded.

Mr Ranga said a tractor-trailer driver, Karnail Singh, a resident of Roshanpur in Patiala district, had lodged a complaint at the Pipli police station, 5 km from here, that he got loaded seven new tractors on a tractor-trailer and left Hoshiarpur in Punjab for Ranchi, Dhanbad in Bihar.

His co-driver, Balvinder Singh, also accompanied him. When he reached Pipli, he parked the loaded tractor-trailer on the outskirt of Kserla village at night and went to meet his in-laws there.

Meanwhile, Balvinder Singh, who was left with the tractor-trailer to take care of it, escaped with the loaded tractor-trailer under the cover of darkness.

Next morning, when Karnail Singh returned to the parking place, he found the same missing.

Mr Ranga said when Karnail Singh failed to trace the tractor-trailer, he informed the police. A police party was constituted and raids were conducted at various places, but in vain.

Ultimately, Balwinder Singh’s residential address was taken from the tractor company where he was employed. From enquiry at his residence, the police came to know that Balwinder was at somewhere at the Hisar road, near Agroha in Haryana.

He was nabbed by the police while he was searching for customers to sell the stolen vehicles, Mr Ranga added.

Admitting his crime during interrogation, Balwinder Singh said when Karnail Singh left the tractor-trailer in his custody, he was tempted to be a rich person overnight by selling the new tractors. Having this idea in mind, he drove away the vehicle to Agroha village, where he was nabbed by the police, Mr Ranga added.
