Ranatunga bats for Ganguly

Dubai, May 4
Sri Lanka’s World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga believes Sourav Ganguly is too good a player to be dropped and he will not be surprised if the Team India skipper leads his side to World Cup victory in the West Indies.

Talking to Khaleej Times, Ranatunga sided with an out-of-form Ganguly and said, “He is too good a player to be axed. He is a very positive captain. I feel that he is one of India’s best captains I have played against.”

Drawing a comparison between the team he led to World Cup victory in 1996 and the side Ganguly led, Ranatunga said, “(Rahul) Dravid, (Sachin) Tendulkar, Ganguly and Virender Sehwag — that is a very, very strong batting line-up with Mohammed Kaif and Yuvraj Singh for the next World Cup.”

“I tell you that is more like my 1996 batting line-up. Actually it is much better than my 1996 World Cup batting line-up. If they can protect these players and go till the 2007 World Cup, I will not be surprised of India’s win,” he said.

Ranatunga said he was impressed by Ganguly’s attitude.

“He is a very cocky and positive captain. You need that. I am not saying that others are bad. But this guy has performed.”

“Just for the last couple of months, he has been going through a bad run. In the meantime, he gets involved in this over-rate thing. Everything goes against him. He is just having a bad run, a bad patch which most of the top cricketers have gone through,” he said.

Opining that it was the time to rally behind the beleaguered Ganguly, Ranatunga said, “This is the time for the team to support him; this is the time for the board to support him; this is the time for the entire country, including the media, to support him. At least for a short period. Give him a little time to recover.”

“It is just one good innings. I tell you he is a top cricketer. I am sure Ganguly will do a great job (as captain) when he returns.”

Ranatunga also advised the media to stop projecting their favourites.

“I will personally prefer the media to stay away. The thing is you have your favourites. Kolkata prefers to promote Ganguly, Mumbai might prefer to promote Sachin Tendulkar and Bangalore might prefer to promote Rahul Dravid. But you should just leave these cricketers alone.”

He, however, sounded not so optimistic about the future of the game in his own country.

“I am not very happy with some of the youngsters coming up. You take the present lot. Sanath Jayasuriya, Marvan Atapattu, Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Tilakaratne Dilshan, Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas are players who have played with us. These are the players we groomed in your times. They are the ones still playing and they are the ones still performing. Where is the young lot?”

“I have already said this before: The day is not far when we will lose to these so-called second-tier Test nations. I am very, very scared for the future of Sri Lankan cricket. You take out Jayasuriya, Atapattu, Murali, Vaas, Sangakkara and Jayawardene and even weak teams like Bangladesh or Zimbabwe will give us a good run,” he observed. — UNI

New Delhi, May 4
Delhi High Court today issued notices to the Union Government, Indian Hockey Federation (IHF), its president K.P.S. Gill and secretary K. Jothikumaran on the petition of IHF vice-president Narendra Batra who challenged the decision of Mr Gill to convene the annual general meeting (AGM) on May 23.

Politicians unite to ‘save’ sports bodies
Satish Misra
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 4
Politicians heading different sports organisations decided at a meeting here today to jointly fight recent attempts by Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh to take over the functioning of the associations of different games.

BJP Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Vijay Kumar Malhotra, former Commerce Minister Arun Jaitley, Water Resources Minister P.R. Dasmunshi, Congress MPs Jyotiraditya Scindia and Rajiv Shukla, Indian Olympic Association (IOC) President Suresh Kalmadi and General Secretary Randhir Singh and BCCI President Ranbir Singh Mahendra, who attended the meeting, resolved to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Leader of the Opposition L.K. Advani to apprise them of the efforts of the governments of Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh to ‘governmentalise’ sports in the country.

A majority of those who attended the hour-long meeting at Mr Kalmadi’s house, apart from being active politicians, were associated with one sports body or another. Belonging to different political parties, they had decided to come together to oppose ‘state encroachment’ in games.

Talking to the Tribune, Mr Rajiv Shukla said those present at the meeting decided to fight tooth and nail the attempts by the state governments to take over the autonomous sports organisations. They also resolved to adopt the legal course of action to thwart the efforts of the states to ‘governmentalise’ sports, Mr Shukla said.

President of the Archery Federation of India V.K. Malhotra, who attended the meeting, said they also took note of Sports Minister Sunil Dutt’s recent observations that many sports organisations were not submitting financial accounts. “We shall contest the Sports Minister’s observation,” he said.

Drawn Test sets new record for tons

St John’s, May 4
West Indies captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Dwayne Bravo completed hundreds here that established a new Test record of eight centuries in a match on the last day of the fourth and final Test against South Africa.

The match ended in a tame draw yesterday, giving the tourists a 2-0 series win.

Chanderpaul scored 127 and Bravo made 107 in a West Indies first innings total of 747.

The previous record had been seven. Three previous Tests had produced that many hundreds — England and Australia at Trent Bridge in 1938, West Indies and Australia at Kingston in 1955, and last year’s Test between South Africa and West Indies at Cape Town.

For a moment, the record overshadowed that South Africa had won the four-Test series 2-0, and reclaimed the Sir Vivian Richards Trophy, symbol of supremacy between the two teams.

They won the second Test at Port of Spain by eight wickets, and the third Test at Bridgetown by an innings and 86 runs. The first Test at Georgetown ended in a draw.

At one stage, towards the end, Boeta Dippenaar, in particular, and Graeme Smith, the South Africa captain, looked like they wanted to add to the new record, but finished unbeaten on 56 and 50, respectively, as South Africa, trailing West Indies by 159 runs on first innings, ended the match on 129 for one in their second innings.

Dippenaar struck seven fours and two sixes from 101 balls in a little over two hours, and Smith, who was later named man of the series, smote seven fours from 87 balls and finished the series with 505 runs.

South Africa suffered an early setback batting a second time, when Tino Best claimed the wicket of Abraham de Villiers, caught for 12 mistiming a pull, but Smith and Dippenaar soon short circuited any ideas of an exciting finish.

Before lunch, Chanderpaul completed his record-equalling 13th Test hundred as he flicked Shaun Pollock through backward square leg for three to reach his milestone.

Chanderpaul enjoyed a bit of good fortune before his dismissal. On 121, he edged at a delivery from Smith and Jacques Kallis muffed a sharp chance at slip.

The breakthrough came when Chanderpaul was run out, going for a third run, and was beaten by Pollock’s direct hit at the bowler’s end.

Courtney Browne, under pressure to produce with the bat to compensate for his poor work with the wicketkeeping gloves, was the other wicket for South Africa in the morning period, when he was adjudged lbw for zero in the next over, when he was struck on the boot by a full pitch from Smith.

After lunch, Bravo, with whom Chanderpaul added 130 for the sixth wicket, needed 32 more runs for his landmark hundred, when West Indies continued from their interval position of 690 for seven.

The allrounder, who had promised much with the bat, but had delivered very little in his seven Tests, reached the milestone with the 12th of his 13 boundaries to third man off de Villiers when he sliced his favourite backfoot drive.

Bravo had to depend upon last man Dwight Washington for him and the match to enter their names in the history books.

China set for clean sweep

Shanghai, May 4
China moved in for the kill today as their hunt for a clean sweep of all five titles at the world table tennis championships snared its first gold medal.

Two Chinese pairs made it into the mixed doubles final to be played later Wednesday, with world No.2 Wang Liqin and Guo Yue facing off against Liu Guozheng and Bai Yang, the fourth seeds.

“It will be a hard fight in the final and I don’t want think of the result,” said Bai, who burst into tears when she lost the mixed doubles final in Paris two years ago.

“This time I don’t want to cry because the gold belongs to China.”

Germany’s on-fire Timo Boll and Christian Suss stand in the home team’s way in the men’s doubles, thrashing tournament favourites Ma Lin and Chen Qi to set up a gold medal showdown with Kong Linghui and Wang Hao.

Kong and Wang upset defending champions Wang Liqin and Yen Sen in their semi-final.

After Wednesday’s quarter-final action, China was left with three players in the women’s singles bidding to add that title to the communist country’s bulging table tennis trophy cabinet.

Top seed Zhang Yining was in awesome form, flattening South Korea’s Kim Hyang Mi in the fourth round Wednesday morning before coming back to drive the dagger into Viktoria Pavlovich of Belarus and book her place in the last four.

With triple champion Wang Nan pondering her future after a shock exit Tuesday, and high-serving world No. 4 Tamara Boros falling to Hong Kong’s Lin Ling Wednesday, Zhang looks unstoppable.

Her compatriots Guo Yan and Guo Yue are also through, along with Hong Kong’s Lin.

China’s technically and physically strong Wang Liqin remains the man to beat among the men. He bumped Hong Kong’s Li Ching from the fourth round but not before a tough seven-set workout.

Also into the quarter-finals are China’s Chen Qi, Sweden’s Peter Karlsson and Oh Sang Eun of South Korea, who beat world No.4 Vladimir Samsonov from Belarus.

“For us, success is synonymous with a sweep,” said China’s national team head coach Cai Zhenhua, indicating the high expectations the nation has of its star players.

“We will do our utmost to clinch the men’s singles title in this tournament,” he added of the most sought-after medal which was snatched from Wang’s grasp in Paris by Austrian Werner Schlager.

Schlager is out of the competition in Shanghai with Europe’s best hopes of retaining the title now resting on the shoulders of Germany’s Boll, a former world No.1 who plays later Wednesday.

China’s Ma Lin, seeded two, is also in with a chance after his knife-edge third round victory Tuesday won praise from men’s team coach Liu Guoling. — AFP

Sachin to cheer Narain in Barcelona Grand Prix

London, May 4
Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar will be cheering for Narain Karthikeyan from the stands at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona when the Indian race sensation burns rubber in the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday, according to media reports here.

Tendulkar is a well-known formula one fan and also a friend of Karthikeyan who admitted receiving advice from the batting maestro on tackling his newfound fame.

According to reports here, Karthikeyan's Jordan teammate Tiago Monteiro will also be cheered by a famous compatriot -- Portuguese football star Deco, who plays for Barcelona.

Prior to the Spanish Grand Prix, Karthikeyan said he was looking forward to race at the circuit where he had tested in winter.

''Barcelona is a track where traction and aerodynamics play an important role because of the long corners and this is the first circuit I know so far this season; therefore I am particularly keen on racing there.''

''We did a lot of work last week at Silverstone, testing Bridgestone tyres and trying to find a good car set-up for the Spanish Grand Prix so we are expecting a reasonable run,'' he said.

Monteiro felt, ''We know Circuit de Catalunya well for having tested there in winter, as this is the case for most of the teams and drivers. However, this does not necessarily mean that it is going to be easy for us. Most of the teams know exactly how to set up the car on this circuit but I am sure it will be an interesting and challenging weekend.''

''We will definitely do our best, try to finish the race and keep up with our good finishing record. I am really looking forward to it and it will be probably crazy with the Fernando Alonso mania,'' he said.

Fellow Jordan driver Robert Doornbos said, ''I have already had some experience in Barcelona as I raced there last year in F3000 and I went very well there. Jordan Grand Prix has also been testing there in winter so they were already able to gather some helpful information.''

''Last week, the team had a positive test at Silverstone and Bridgestone came up with some really promising tyres for Barcelona but also for the forthcoming races. I am really looking forward to this weekend and especially to driving on Friday,'' he said.

Jordan Sporting Director Trevor Carlin also sounded optimistic.

''We are looking forward to the second European race of the season. We had a very productive test last week at Silverstone, where we did some really good work with Bridgestone. We are hoping to have another strong race performance like we did in Imola two weeks ago. We have a few small aerodynamic developments and hopefully this will go closer to the pace,'' he said. — UNI

‘Dudu magic’ helps Sporting win

Kozhikode, May 4
Two second-half goals by Sporting Club de Goa enabled them thrash lowly-placed State Bank of Travancore 2-0 in the National Football League for the ONGC Cup here today.

It was once again the ‘Dudu magic’ that gave the initiative to the visitors, now leading the overall points table with 45 points, in the 52nd minute when the Goan captain Dudu Omagbemi neatly guided a corner kick from Wilton Gomes into the goalmouth.

Eight minutes later, Fernandes Bibiano increased the lead after turning in a header off a Dudu pass as SBT’s custodian, Jean Christian totally misjudged the move near the goal area.

With this loss, the bankmen now stand relegated from the League with only 15 points and only an inconsequential match left against Fransa, the date for which will be decided later.

The goalless first half, however, belonged to the hosts who played quite well as usual in the initial stages but failed to score.

Dudu Omagbemi, the cynosure of all eyes, came up with many brilliant passes before finally settling to score the opener himself. Dudu, the leading scorer in the League with 21 goals, was later adjudged the man-of-the-match.

Though SBT tried hard to reduce the margin in the dying moments of the game by also bringing the in-form Sylvester Ignatius as substitute, they remained so unorganised that they could not penetrate the formidable rival defence. — PTI

Defending champion Moya ousted

Rome, May 4
Defending champion Carlos Moya was knocked out in the first round of the Rome Masters after losing 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) to Italian wildcard Potito Starace.

Moya, the seventh seed, was doubtful to start the clay court tournament after straining his right shoulder in Estoril last week, an injury that forced the Spaniard to hand Tommy Robredo a semifinal victory.

And the 28-year-old former Roland Garros champion was clearly in distress against an unforgiving Starace, who took full advantage of the lame title-holder’s weak service to send the home crowd into delirium.

Starace, who would meet Spaniard Alberto Martin in the second round, said even a victory against an injured Moya was worth celebrating.

Starace said the passionate Italian crowd helped him through.

Reigning Australian Open champion Marat Safin fought back from a set down to defeat Jiri Novak.

The Russian second seed lost the opener on a tie-breaker, having led 5-2, but he conceded just two more games in a 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 6-1 victory over the experienced Czech.

Safin, who had never gone beyond the third round here and was far more comfortable on hard courts, was joined in the last 32 by Argentine Gaston Gaudio and in-form Spanish teenager Rafael Nadal.

Third seed Gaudio, who won in Estoril last week, beat Slovakian Karol Beck 6-4, 6-3, while fifth seed Nadal, going for his fifth singles title this year, outclassed Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-0, 6-2.

Safin would play Spanish qualifier Nicolas Almagro in the second round, while Gaudio would meet Italy’s Filippo Volandri. Nadal would face unseeded Romanian Victor Hanescu.

Safin, winner of the 2000 US Open, admitted that he became complacent after applying the early pressure to Novak.

Clijsters advances

BERLIN: Kim Clijsters won for the 18th time in 19 matches, routing Ukraine qualifier Yuliana Fedak 6-1, 6-0 to reach the second round of the German Open.

The former top-ranked Belgian continued her strong comeback from a 10-month layoff with a left wrist injury, needing just 44 minutes to win.

The German Open was a major tune-up for the French Open. The clay court event boasted a strong field, led by Maria Sharapova — who could become the world’s top-ranked player by winning the title — and Amelie Mauresmo.

Showers later led to the rescheduling of matches involving several star names, including Belgium’s Justine Henin-Hardenne, who was chasing a third straight clay title. — AFP, AP

McEnroe keen to have Agassi in team

London, May 4
Patrick McEnroe hopes he can again call on Andre Agassi when the U.S. Davis Cup team fights for its survival in a world group playoff in Belgium. Failure to beat the Belgians would leave the USA -- winners of a record 31 Davis Cup titles -- playing outside the elite 16-nation World Group for the first time since 1988.

Captain McEnroe knows he will need his best squad for the September 23-25 tie.

''I haven't talked specifically to Andre yet about this particular match... obviously, we'd love to have him,'' McEnroe said.

''An away match with Belgium is a difficult match. It's going to be a tough match on clay.'' McEnroe said he is expecting the world's fastest server Andy Roddick and doubles specialist twins Bob and Mike Bryan to be available.

The 35-year-old Agassi was in the team which lost in the first round to Croatia 3-2 in March.

It was an unhappy return to the men's team competition for Agassi who had stepped down in 2000 to concentrate on grand slams and the ATP Tour. — UNI

Pak Masters hand India XI 145-run defeat

Dubai, May 4
Cheered by a partisan crowd and powered by Inzamam-ul Haq's unbeaten knock of 72, Pakistan Masters crushed their Indian counterparts by 145 runs to lift the Zayed Cup in Abu Dhabi last night.

Batting first, the Pakistan side ran into deep water, losing top four batsmen with just 36 runs on board. Indian Masters, however, could not tighten the noose, allowing the rivals to make a comeback and it was some solid batting show by the Pakistan middle order that saw them reaching a modest 283 for eight.

Ramesh Powar dropped Asif Kamal and that proved costly as the Pakistani batsman went on to make 58, putting on 91 runs with another half centurion Yousuf Youhana (50).

Abdul Razzaq came down the order and sent the bowlers of the second-string Indian side on a leatherhunt. Inzamam played a fluent unbeaten knock of 72 to guide the side to a decent total.

India started chasing on an ominous note with opener Shikhar Dhawan out for his second duck of the tournament and India discard Sadagopan Ramesh too departed soon leaving the Indian Masters reeling at three for two.

Wickets tumbled at regular intervals and the Indian side was reduced to 69 for seven with none of the top order batsmen showing any resistance.

Brief score: Pakistan 283 for eight in 50 overs (Asif Kamal 58, Yousuf Youhana 50, Abdul Razzaq 44, Inzamam-ul Haq not out 72, Amit Bhandari 3/61) : India 138 all out in 34.1 overs (Agan Pandit 25, Harvinder Singh 28, Razzaq 2/34, Rao 2/16). — UNI

Churchill Bros hold JCT

Margao, May 4
Churchill Bros' ambition of avoiding relegation suffered a severe blow as they came from behind to hold JCT to a 1-1 draw in the National Football League (NFL) match played at Nehru stadium here today.

JCT took the lead in the 20th minute through Harvinder Singh but Churchill fought back and restored parity in the 34th minute through Marcos Pereira.

East Bengal shocked

Mumbai: Mahindra United shocked holders East Bengal with a lone second-half goal, headed in by their tall striker Abhishek Yadav, to dampen the latter's chances of retaining the National Football League title today.

Yadav, included in the India probables list for the forthcoming tour to Pakistan, rose above the Kolkata team's defence to precisely meet the corner kick from the left taken by wing half Jatin Bisht in the 75th minute of play against the then run of play and nodded the ball in first bounce.

The lone-goal victory for Mahindra forced East Bengal, third in the table going into the tie, to remain with 40 points with two tough matches in hand in the league while the local giants increased their tally to 32 with one match left to play against leaders Sporting Clube de Goa.

Later, Mahindra missed two gilt-edged chances to score after playing second fiddle for the major part of the match when East Bengal's mercurial Alvito D'Cunha was on the field.

— PTI
