SBI branch held guilty of fraud
Our Correspondent

Bilaspur, April 23
Civil Judge (Senior Division) A.C. Thalwal here has held the State Bank of India, Bilaspur branch, guilty of fraud. He has said that the bank had obtained decree for recovery of Rs 43,065 against five persons by suppressing relevant facts and information.

The respondents — Indira Binding Works, Parkash Singh, Kuleep Singh, Bhagsingh and Surinder Singh of government Industrial area and Kothi, village near here — had challenged this court decree through their counsel A.L. Nadda. They had claimed that the bank had withdrawn Rs 35,000 from an account of the respondents and transferred it to another account without any permission of or information to the respondents and against the rules and had thus claimed this amount of decree from the respondents.

The court found that the bank had withdrawn Rs 35,000 from one bank account to another account of respondents without any instruction from them. It had withdrawn this amount from building loan and had credited the same in their term-loan account and had kept in secret. This had resulted in the respondents suffering an interest to the extent of 2.5 per cent over and above due to them and has thus committed a fraud on respondents.

The Judge nullified the already passed decree and said that bank was not entitled to any amount claimed by it. He dismissed the bank decree with special cost of Rs 5,000 to be paid to the respondents within two months and also to pay the excess amount deposited with the bank by them.

CPM opposes retrenchment
Tribune News Service

Shimla, April 23
The CPM opposed the retrenchment of 1,630 daily wagers of the Public Works Department in Dharampur division in Mandi district.

In a statement issued here yesterday, the State Secretary of the CPM, Mr Rakesh Singha, said the retrenchment had been done under the World Bank pressure after accepting a restructural loan of Rs 8,000. “There is no justification in retrenchment of daily wagers, especially in the PWD at a time when the government is claiming to increase the road network in the state,” he said.

Mr Singha warned it was the beginning of the biggest attack on the working class and farmers in the days ahead. “The tall claims of the government of providing employment and being pro-poor stands thoroughly exposed by the anti-working class,” he alleged.

He reminded that the Arjun Singh government in Madhya Pradesh had suffered the worstever electoral defeat as a result of retrenching PWD workers. Instead of fulfilling its election promise of regularising daily wagers with seven years’ of service, the government was resorting to retrenching them, he lamented.
