No non-academic duties for teachers, assures Johar

The Punjab Government has decided that schoolteachers should not be put on non-academic duties during schooltime. It also decided to continue the PTA funds in the schools.

Mr Harnam Dass Johar, School Education Minister, said since there was a shortage of teachers, deputing them for duties in the field by various departments caused a loss to studies.

Senior functionaries of the Education Department have been directed to conduct seminars, workshops or training camps for the teachers during the holidays.

The government, he said, was committed to revolutionarising the education system by taking more reformatory measures, including change of syllabi and curricula and introducing new subjects like computer and environment.

He clarified that collection of PTA funds in the schools had not been discontinued. ‘‘All educational institutions have been directed to maintain transparency in the utilisation of such funds.

To attract students towards government schools, he had recently convened a meeting of teachers’ union and associations along with management committees of government-aided schools to redress their grievances.

He again clarified that privatisation of schools was not on the agenda of the government. The need of the hour to motivate teachers to produce better academic results and proficiency.
